we're not talking about who came out in the middle we're talking about who came
out on top a big night of Elections thank you so much for joining us this
Wednesday morning I'm Heather Childers let's get straight
to our top story we certainly appreciate you joining us
results pouring in from eight states on California with a gubernatorial seat up
for grabs and both parties hoping to flip crucial House seats in November
let's get right to Grif Jenkins who is live in Washington DC to break it all
down for us so Grif long night it was indeed good morning Heather they call it
the jungle because the two top two primary candidates advance regardless of
party and nowhere in the so-called jungle was a more fierce named
California's giving a twirl race where the GOP would not be denied last night
Democrat lieutenant governor Gavin Newsom easily cruised to advance to the
general election putting President Trump front and center voters will have a real
choice this November between a governor who's gonna stand up to Donald Trump and
a foot soldier in his war on California mark my words
I've never backed down from a fight but it was president Trump's support for
Republican John COTS which helped him keep the GOP from being shut out mr.
Newsom made it clear that he wanted to run against me instead of another
Democrat be careful mr. Newsom be careful what you wish for let's send him
the very first message and that is it wasn't Donald Trump who made California
the highest tax state in the country it was Gavin Newsom and the Democrats
it Democrats helps of riding a blue wave to regain the house majority are in
question at this hour depending on the outcome of seven of California's
Republican held seats where Clinton won in 2016 remember Democrats need to flip
23 total seats in the house to regain control at this hour some of those seven
races still close to call with the possibility of Democrats giving box out
of those races by Republicans winning the top two spots for example in
California's 48th hether incumbent dana rohrabacher easily won first with
roughly 30% but the two Democrats are being challenged by a Republican all
within striking distance of each other very important there and there were some
airs in LA County some 118 thousand names left off the ballot due to a
printing error County Clerk Dean Logan is issuing this statement we apologize
for the inconvenience and concern this has caused voters should be assured
their vote will be counted it wasn't just California we should point out
eight states cast ballots last night including Alabama Iowa Mississippi
Montana New Jersey New Mexico in South Dakota
a notable outcome senator incumbent senator Democrat Bob Menendez held on
despite his recent trout but make no mistake as these results come in this
morning this is all about Democrats hoping to retake the house and they are
hinging upon California where race is still in question all right curve
Jenkins live for us that was a lot thank you so much appreciate you running
through all of it for us well Democrats in the meantime pulling
out all the stops as Griff said in last night's primaries as they seek to retake
the house but Fox News politics editor Chris Tyrell says that they're going to
need a lot of help to hold the line in the midterms so far Democrats have a lot
to be happy about tonight in terms of the way things win in the East though
Republicans got pretty much what they needed now that we know that this house
contest battle for control the house could be quite close right if the
election were held today control the house would be narrowly decided we're
looking at one or two of these House districts could make all the difference
Democrats need help right now they're gonna have to airdrops it's gonna be
like the Berlin Airlift in Orange County they're gonna have to dump millions and
millions and millions of dollars to try to hold the line in those seats and get
voters out you know what they're gonna say don't let Nancy Pelosi be back in
charge well the Democrats need to flip 23 seats to regain majority of the house
to the other big stores were following Singapore's Cappella Hotel is set to
make history the luxury resort will play host to president Trump's June 12th
summit with North Korean dictator Kim Jong on a Trump is expected president
Trump I should say is expected to stay at the hotel which sits on a secluded
island actually that once served as a pirate hideout they tell us well the
denuclearization talks will mark the first-ever meeting between a u.s.
president and the leader of the rogue regime Chinese tech giant ZTE could be
back in business Reuters reporting the Trump
administration reached a preliminary agreement with the company lifting its
ban on buying American supplies while the tech giant has left economically
crippled or what's left economically group of I should say after doing
business with Iran and North Korea violating sanctions the company will
reportedly pay a billion dollars in fines China has offered to buy another
25 billion in American goods well the Philadelphia Eagles we told you about
this yesterday the head coach Doug Peterson expected to address the Super
Bowl champs canceled White House visit today at the Trump team calling the
whole thing a political stunt from the Eagles
Doug mackelway has that story for us a
thousand Philadelphia Eagles fans came to the White House the only thing
missing was their team after President Trump withdrew their invitation he
tweeted quote unfortunately only a small number of players decided to come and we
canceled the event staying in the locker room for the playing of our National
Anthem is as disrespectful to our country as kneeling sorry in a formal
statement the White House added that the invitations would remain open for the
1,000 invited fans who quote deserve better no members of the Eagles team
knelt during the national anthem through the 2017 28 seasons but if
players did stand and raise their fists during the anthem at times the decision
to withdraw the invitation has again left the president in familiar crossfire
he won his battle with the NFL they changed the rules on taking a knee
during the games he could have just declared victory and welcomed those who
wanted to come it's a defeat for the players one more time this you know they
just will not let this go away The Associated Press reports that the
President had been leery of the visit all along noting team owner jeffrey
luery has been a trump critic the White House today blamed the Eagles franchise
for what it calls a political stunt if this wasn't a political stunt they
wouldn't have waited until Monday well after a thousand of their fans had
traveled and taken time out of their schedules to offer only a tiny handful
of representatives to attend the event in a tweet the Eagles player Malcolm
Jenkins blamed the president quote the decision was made to lie and paint the
picture that these players are anti America anti-flag and anti-military we
will continue to fight for impacted citizens and give a voice to those who
never had one in Washington Doug mackelway Fox News and other news the
ousted Deputy Director of the FBI wants to trade his testimony for immunity of
the attorney for Andrew McCabe asking the Senate for protection against
possible prosecution ahead of the congressional hearing on the handling of
the Clinton email investigation McCabe you'll remember was fired over
allegations that he leaked to the media and he lied about it a couple of times
and we're now learning that FBI agent Peter Straub played a larger role in the
Clinton probe than originally thought the FBI espionage chief detailing his
work in a closed-door meeting on Capitol Hill a struck was demoted over the
anti-trump text sent to a co-worker and lover while acting eyes director Thomas
Holman defending the zero-tolerance policy at our nation's borders
those who choose to buy that long come between the ports of entry are
committing crime it's sad to see the children cry when you take a parent out
of home but because the sad doesn't mean we ignore the law I can't blame anybody
for wanting to be a part of the greatest country on Earth but is the right way to
do it a long way to do it his response stemming from backlash on Isis policy of
separating parents and children caught illegally crossing the border
this comes as officials plan to tour three military bases in Texas to see if
they are in fact suitable to house the 11,000 unaccompanied migrant children
currently in the u.s. President crazy Mitch McConnell for keeping the Senate
in Washington this summer our commander-in-chief tweeting Mitch
McConnell announced that he will cancel the Senate's August recess great
maybe the Democrats will finally get something done other than their
acceptance of high crime and high taxes we need border security the critics say
the Senate Majority Leader is trying to keep Democrats off the campaign trail
but he says there's too much work to be done over at the House members appear
ready for recess Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy called this the most productive
session in years so keep them there till the work gets done well today marks the
74th anniversary of d-day Americans all across the country will honor the
thousands who've fought and died in the battle at Normandy nearly 3,000
Americans were killed storming the beach in 1944 it was one of the most pivotal
moments in world war two leading to the liberation of France and signalling a
beginning to the end of the war in Europe well the time now is about ten
minutes after the top of the hour and President Trump is set to sign a new VA
bill today that could change the way our heroes get health care our next guest is
an Iraq war veteran here to explain why this bill will make all the difference
it looked like I was saying I didn't apologize I apologized to my family to
Monica Lewinsky and her family to the American people and Bill Clinton gets
Amy to do over but just wait until you hear what another one of his accusers
has to say about it
well president trop will come through on his promise to put America's Heroes
first by signing the VA mission Act into law here to explain why this is such a
major step toward fixing the VA zero can he'll care system his executive director
for concerned veterans for America an Iraq war veteran dan Caldwell thank you
very much for joining us we appreciate it they can read me on again Heather so
let's take a look for people at home and break down a little bit of what the VA
mission Act would do it adds 5.2 billion to VA health care program it expands
access to non-va providers it combines the VA community care programs and it
expands Family Caregiver the family caregiver program so what do you think
is the most important element here that will make a difference to veterans quite
simply this bill will give veterans more health care choice that additional money
is not going into the VA Sailing government-run health care system it's
going in a new community care programs that will allow veterans to access care
outside of the VA when they need it and when the VA can't provide the care that
that they deserve it additionally creates private urgent care clinics for
veterans so they can access walk-in care without an appointment which will vastly
increase choice and access for care for veterans and I think that's the biggest
part of this and as you know this was one of the president's biggest promises
and he's keeping it by signing this bill today another promise kept but what
about the timeliness of appointments I know that this is always a huge issue
with anyone's health care specifically for veterans how will this work so one
of the big remaining issues at the VA not at every VA Hospital but certain
ones across the country is that they're still not timely care for veterans there
was just a recent government accountability point that the current
choice program which was implemented under the Obama administration is not
providing timely care in many cases that's because of the biak recei because
of some of the rules that were put in place by the Obama administration that
quite frankly were put in place to undermine the choice program because
they were uncomfortable with it because they didn't want that much access to
private care this bill will streamline those programs
it will reduce the amount of bureaucracy and set clear standards for when a
veteran can access care outside of the VA and empower veterans not bureaucrat
and somewhat I understand a lot of veterans are using that program
specifically about 30,000 appointments a day
so this 5.2 billion dollars will go toward continuing that choice program
through 2019 and then what happens once the program ends in 2019 there will be a
new VA Community Care and choice program will be one program instead of seven and
that reduced bureaucracy and duplication which will hopefully allow veterans to
get care quicker and which is more convenient to them so you know firsthand
the issues that are have been in place with the VA health care system those
issues moving forward does this do enough what needs to happen next well
look this bill is a big deal it's a big win for veterans is a big win for
President Trump but it doesn't fix every problem within the VA we still need to
get to a point where veterans have full choice what I mean by that is a veteran
can choose to go to a VA community provider or a VA healthcare system at
their at their choice not not determined by a bureaucrat or not determined by
standards they need to have their choice this bill gets us very close to that and
it is a big step forward but it doesn't go all the way all right Dan thank you
so much for joining us this morning we appreciate you breaking it down for us
and thank you for your service as well well thank you for having me on to
discuss this important issue and thank you for covering all right have a great
day well the time now is about 18 minutes after the top of the hour and a
brand new twist in the bromance between Dennis Rodman and Kim Young on will the
former pro-basketball star have a key role in the high-stakes Singapore
summits Carly's gym because this year with the rumors swirling online
I always wanted to speak French but I never had the time and then I tried
