Welcome to Google Photos Community Support Forum & thanks for your post.
When you delete a photo through your device, it will vanish from the cloud & all synced devices. That's the design feature of the Sync function.
Once you activate sync, you should never delete pics straightforwardly.
Sync means your photo library stays consistent across all devices you sign in to your account with Google Photos.
For example, deleting a photo from one device will delete it everywhere, and editing that on the web will edit it on the original device.
Now before proceeding to delete something, please go through these steps first.
- Tap the library -> Photos on device -> View all. Ensure you do not see a cloud symbol on any folder unless you intentionally skip those from the backup.
- Tap your profile icon & check whether you find a message "backup complete".
- Next, visit the site https://photos.google.com & verify all the latest pics are visible there.
- Additionally, create a local backup by copying the content to some external HDD or USB.
Once you are through all the steps above, you can delete the pics through the following steps ensuring to retain one on the cloud.
- Use some file manager or gallery app to delete the photo.
If not, you can delete it through the Google Photos app by following these steps.
- Tap to open the pic either through the photos tab or on your Android phone through Library - Folder.

Google Photos app acts as a portal viewer.
That will show the pics from your phone + cloud irrespective of the sync status.

I am using iCloud for my main backup of everything in my iPhone, including the photos.
Now I just started with Google Photos, since I had many photos on my PC that i wanted to upload to a cloud, to be able to access my photos everywhere and also keep them safe.
I installed the app from the Appstore and started using it in my iPhone.
I also asked to back up my photos to Google Photos, which I agreed to, but then I is always prompting me to free up space. I don't want to free up the space, I want the photos to remain on the iPhone as well as being backed up buy Google photos.
I know that nothing will happen unless I press the button "clear space" but I don't like having the button there, I just want to be able to disable the feature, so I will not by accident clear all my photos from my iPhone and iCloud. It would be best if the button just wasn't there.
I have looked in every settings and googled the issue a lot but found n resolution.
Is this even possible? if it is, how to do it ? and if not possible, how is best to request this option made by Google.

To send the feedback:
- Open Google Photos app.
- At the top left, open the Menu

I must leave further discussion to other experts because I don't use iOS for good reasons :-)
I only know that you also can install the iCloud-app on pc and that maybe preferable above the Backup & Sync app from Google which only can upload into and endless stream like your phone is doing.
