I saved 2 videos from my phone to a shared google album. On the original device, they are playing in original quality. On all other devices, including my desktop, one is playing in original quality and one is playing in 360p despite all settings being on "original." The suggestions I've found in previous posts are not working. Thank you!

Answer:

Leigh,

Good morning. The first thing I'd do is examine the original video file on your phone to see what the quality and resolution is. Start with the simplest thing first. If your phone's camera was recording at only 360p, then that is the original quality and everything is working exactly as it's supposed to.

One other thing to keep in mind - you have to give Google Photos some time to fully process uploaded videos. Longer videos will take more time to completely process and analyze. During that time, you may still be able to view those vids, but they'll only be at a lower quality because processing is till happening in the background. So, if one of your videos is longer and has a larger file size, that will take more time before it's viewable at full quality, compared to shorter video clip with a smaller file size.

Let me know if you still have questions about this.

Regards,
~ Greg

Answer:

How long should we be expected to wait for the high resolution versions to be available?  I recorded a 3 minute 4K video yesterday, and it is only showing as available at 360p.  It was uploaded yesterday.  My settings are to upload original quality photos and videos.  This concerns me greatly as I rely on Google Photos to backup my life events, and discovering something like this causes me pause for concern if I have made the right choice with this app.

Answer:

Shane,

Since 4K video files are significantly larger than 1080p files, and you've uploaded that file at original quality, the amount of time it might take for Google's video processing to complete could be quite a while. The settings of the camera will also have an impact on processing time. Settings like frames per second (FPS), bitrate, etc. will all play a part.

For example, 1080p footage recorded at 30 frames per second should come out to approximately 125-150mb file size. But, a 4K video that was also recorded at 30 FPS could be closer to 500mb. However, some cameras record at higher frame rates when in 4K mode (60 FPS), so those files would be about double the size.

Regardless, the main thing is you've uploaded that file at original quality, meaning Google must process it exactly as it is without compression. Considering the size of the file and the various settings that must be retained, alongside the millions of uploads from other users, you're going to need to be patient for that to complete. Unfortunately, I can't give you an exact time for when you can expect it to be ready. Talking with others here, I've heard that lengthy 4K uploads can take days or even weeks to finish processing, again depending on all the variables.

My suggestion is that you just remain patient and do not discard the original video file. You could also perform a series of experiments to get a better feel for processing times. Upload a 10-second 4K video, a 30-second one, and a 60-second one, then make a note of exactly how long it was between upload and completion of processing. If you do that test, I'd also really appreciate it if you could post back here with the dates & times you uploaded the files and the dates & times processing was finished. That would be very helpful insight for other users who upload in 4K original quality.

Regards,
~ Greg

I have a 720P video about 10 seconds and almost 18 MB currently playing at 480P but it was uploaded about 12 hours ago. A 10 second 720P video at the same size was uploaded a few hours ago and it plays at 720P.  So that older video is still processing?

I'm out of storage (~ 97%) for the free tier. I followed the guide in https://support.google.com/photos/answer/6220791?co=GENIE.Platform%3DDesktop&hl=en but it doesn't seem to work.

I've changed Original Quality to Storage Saver. I've clicked the Recover Storage button twice, on 2 different days, but the storage doesn't change.

All of my storage is in Photos, there is nothing in Gmail, Gdrive and there is only 4MB unsupported video. Quota Management (https://photos.google.com/quotamanagement) shows 5.2GB for large photo and video.

What am I missing? Thanks!

Google Photos app doesn't create albums corresponding to folders automatically.
You will have to select all the pics in a folder & add those to an album with a matching name.

Hi all. I recently reinstalled Windows followed by Google Backup and Sync. I noticed a duplicate My Computer (1) and followed online advice moving my two folders (scanned docs and photos) from original My Computer to new folder. When I added my "Scanned Docs" folder back in Backup and Sync Preferences under My Computer it worked like a charm. But after adding back my Photos folder it wanted to upload all the photos again. My photo folder has subfolders for each year and, before realising what's happening, it started duplicating the year folders and files inside. So I have two 2019 folders with the same files inside. I stopped the sync, deleted the newly added folders and files but now can't add my photo folder to sync without it wanting to upload 35k files. It says it will merge into the Photos folder, but all subfolders are duplicated after sync starts. The photos in Drive are all stored as Original Quality and it's still set to that in preferences when adding my photos folder.

I don't want to delete the photos folder on drive because then I'd need to set everything up on Photos again (linking names to faces, albums, shared albums etc).

I've not seen anyone else have this particular issue of the files and subfolders duplicating after the merge message.

Thanks

Question: How to reduce size ffom 8x10 to 3x3

How to reduce print size from 8x10 to 3x3.

Len
That's difficult - also because 3x3 is not a standard photopaper size.
But first you need to edit your picture by cropping it to a square of the best part and then select Save as a copy to keep your original unchanged.
Then you need to install a pinter-app related to your wireless printer - in my case HP Envoy. But even then I did not succeed to get a square print of about 3x3, but a rectangular print of standard 4x6 inch.
I remember from the past that I needed special software to get this done on my computer and that is too complex to explain here.
So you should ask an old nerd in your environment, because young nerds are unsuitable for this precious task :-)
Sorry

Question: What to do if storage is full

I need storage in Google photos

The amount of free storage space you have with Google is shared between Google Photos, Google Drive, and Gmail.

This means that email attachments in Gmail, original quality pictures in Google Photos, and certain file types in Google Drive will all reduce the amount of space you have left.

Visit the Google One storage page to see your current storage usage. Visit the Google One Storage Management page to view more comprehensive details about your files along with options for cleaning it up to create more space.

This info should go a long way to helping you figure out what's responsible for using your storage.

Hi, Grace Dafe

Welcome to Google Photos Community Support Forum & thanks for your query.

Google Photos never uploads the same picture multiple times.
What we see as duplicates have some difference in file format or metadata.

Regrettably, Google Photos doesn't provide any means to remove the apparent duplicates. You have to search those manually.

However, you will find some tips in this article on how to avoid duplicates in the first place & how to remove the ones which are already there.

Question: Shared library counts towards my storage on Pixel 2 XL

I have Pixel 2 XL and a month ago my Google Photos storage was under 200MB as all the photos uploaded from Pixel 2 XL are not counted towards google storage. But today my Google photos storage is more than 6 GB. Is it because of photos shared by wife using Shared Library? She is sharing photos using Share library feature on her phone and I am adding all those photos to my library. Do these photos count towards my storage as my wife is not having Pixel 2 XL?

Answer:

Only the photos uploaded from the Pixel camera in Original size are free. If you also want your wife's photos to be free, you should select "High Quality" in https://photos.google.com/settings. Already added photos can be converted to HQ by using "RECOVER STORAGE" on the same page. That will not affect your Pixel photos.

Answer:

But there is no way to select High Quality in Photos app on Pixel 2 XL as it defaults to Original Quality. You can't also select to save your partner's Shared Library photos in High Quality. As your partner's photos are saved to your library from your Pixel phone, I thought they will not be counted towards your storage, but looks like they will be counted towards your storage even though they are saved to your library from your Pixel phone. But Recover Storage seems to be a good option.

Answer:

"there is no way to select High Quality in Photos app on Pixel 2 XL"
The setting "High Quality" can in my opinion be done in the browser app. That can be done on a computer, but may work on a phone as well (I cannot check this).

"your partner's photos are saved to your library from your Pixel phone"
I think that the partner photos are added to your library at the back end (at Google's servers), not from the phone.

Please let us know how it goes.

Answer:

I honestly think this is a bug.  My scenario is slightly different, but the same result.  My wife and I both have Pixel 2 XLs and both have the unlimited free storage at Original quality in the Google Photos Android App.  Also, in the Google Photos via the web, the settings have High quality (free unlimited storage) checked.  Obviously this is different and controls any photos I upload via the website.

Usually for an event where we both take pictures, I will create an album and my wife will add pictures to the album once I share it with her.  She will enable the setting "Show in Albums" so she can see the Shared Album in her Albums.  We both will then go into the album and click on the cloud in the upper right corner to "Add to my library".  At this point, the pictures I shared with her will be counted against her storage and the picture she shared with me will be counted against my storage.

1. We both have Pixel 2 XLs, should it be unlimited free storage at Original quality regardless?
2. If not, shouldn't Google be smart enough to downgrade to the free unlimited High Quality as to not affect our storage limits?

Answer:

I have the same question as User 14671649464516228431 : My wife and I both have a Pixel 2XL, thus free unlimited storage with original quality. We both share all pictures n videos either of us takes automatically with the other one, thus both of us should always have the exact same pictures.

I noticed now, however, that a video I had taken with my Pixel 2XL at 1080p@60fps can't be played in high res in her Google Photos. The maximum resolution she's being offered is 360p, which is obviously unacceptable.

So here's my questions:
  • are those pictures and videos I took with my Pixel 2XL shared to her in original quality or are they compressed in any way?
  • In case they're being compressed, is that intentional or a bug?

Answer:

Just chanced on this and I agree with the replies, the system is really messed up.
Prior photos uploaded by other people through their Pixel phones (with free storage), after adding to my library, now get counted towards my quota.
So interestingly, the 'free storage' of a pixel phone means that it must be triggered at the point of time where the image is uploaded from your phone to your account directly. It cannot be a photo-taken-by-pixel2, and subsequently introduced to the account via other means.

It's not exactly exactly a bug, but a huge grey area that is unfortunately extremely unclear to people, especially when I just accidentally clicked the add to library button and my storage used just jumped by 2-3gb. Woah.

Answer:
