Hello,

Are you doing this from a mobile data connection or WiFi? What's the connection speed. I'd recommend trying this from a WiFi connection with good internet speeds.

Let me know how it goes!

Hi, I downloaded all of my pictures from google photos to my Mac using Takeout. In each folder there are images but also files that look like a piece of paper with the name something like IMG_1462.JPG.json. The files that end in .json do not seem to contain an image and it is random when they are included. Sometimes there are a bunch of them with random names (almost like the image failed to download correctly) and sometimes it will have the identical name to an actual image (almost like it was a duplicate.) Anyways, I have way too many photos to go through and confirm that they are all there and I'm not sure how I can confirm. Any ideas on this? I want to make sure all of my photos are downloaded from Google photos so I can clear up some space on there for other things but I don't want to delete until I know for sure!

I've attached a screenshot for an example

Answer:

Hello Becca,

I have pasted a method below, but one of the things which makes this hard is that if you have multiple zips then each zip has to be extracted to the same directory. An example is the Photos from 2016 which may be spread over multiple zips. If you selected just the year albums you can ignore the information below and try to get the year albums combined.

Regards,
Peter
==========================================
Go to Google Dashboard and expand the Photos tab.
Left click on the 3 dots and select Download data. If you wait a minute until 'All photos albums included' pops up then click on it and deselect all.
See screenshots online.
Then scroll down and select all the year albums Photos from 2020 etc, or any Albums you have created

You will now get a single copy of each photo, one json file per photo, and one filename-edited.jpg for each edited photo.

Unfortunately there is no easy way to use the json files without specialist software so they can be safely deleted.

Hello,

I am not sure what is "Momentum". If it is an app on your device, there should be a folder where it stores photos. Go to the menu icon (three lines) and tap  "Device Folders". You should see the folder from this app here. Enable backup for this folder.

Hope this helps!

Hi, anu Shivya

Welcome to Google Photos Community Support Forum & thanks for your query.

However, once a user deletes something permanently despite a warning message or allows the content to time out in the bin, Google doesn't maintain any backup.
There is no way to get back the content through Google Photos.

Nevertheless, you may install to your Android device a deleted photo recovery app (be sure to not pick one that requires rooting) https://play.google.com/store/search?q=recover%20deleted%20photos&c=apps;
and run a scan for anything to recover.

Ok. So before I discovered google photos, I used to and still do, save photos in the phone from twitter, when i went to check it, it created an album for the app. Whenever I added saved more photos from Twitter, it adds to the album automatically, but in google photos, I had to add it manually to the album, is there any possibility to add it automatically instead?

Answer:

Hello,

The first time you download an image from Twitter app, Photos will ask if you want to backup photos saved from Twitter. If you missed this step, tap the menu icon and tap Device Folders. Here, enable backup for Twitter.

From now onwards, any photo you download from Twitter app will be backed up to Photos.

If you are downloading photos from the Twitter website, you will need to back them up manually.

Question: Sync google drive to google photos

Following the instructions on here, I enabled the function in google drive to save google photos on …

Following the instructions on here, I enabled the function in google drive to save google photos on google drive. It created the "google photos" folder and I moved all of my family photos already in google drive into the folder - but they are not syncing to google photos. I monkeyed around with it, tried turning on the sync in google photos but then it pulled in every photo I have on google drive - including thousands of work images I have saved on there. I don't want to muddy up my personal photos with business related images, I only want to sync the google photos folder in google drive. Is there any way to do this?

Answer:

Hello Meghan, adding photos to the Google Photos folder on Google Drive will not sync those photos over to Google Photos. The only way to show your Google Drive photos on Google Photos is to turn on Google Drive in Google Photos as you did, but that will unfortunately show all your Google Drive photos in Google Photos.

There's currently no way to show select Google Drive photos in Google Photos, it's all or nothing.

Please send feedback from the Photos app to request this as a new feature.

Answer:

Hello Meghan,

You can get your photos in Google Photos with the following steps.
  1. Move the photos out of the Google Photos folder back to a folder or folders in the top directory of My Drive
  2. Make a list of the folders you have used
  3. Enable the Google Photos setting to sync Drive photos. Ignore the business related images for now
  4. In Google Photos type the name of one of your folders in the Search bar and open the folder
  5. Select all the photos and click on the + sign at the top right and add to a New album
  6. Optionally you can delete the Google Drive folder at this stage without affecting the Google Photos album
  7. Repeat for the rest of the folders
  8. Turn off the Google Photos setting which will remove all the business related images
Good Luck,
Peter

Answer:

@Meghan
  • Like Salim said, the "Google Photos" folder is ONLY intended to show photos that are uploaded directly to Google Photos, thus NOT uploaded from the computer through "Backup & Sync".
  • I think that the best you can do now is delete this folder (entire folder).
    The help https://support.google.com/photos/answer/6156103 says:
    • Delete items from the "Google Photos" folder: they will be removed from your Google Photos library.
      • Note: if the photo is in a Google Photos album, it will stay in the album.
Remark: this only applies to deleting items from Google Drive and synced to Google Photos. It does not apply to deleting items from the Google Photos folder.
    • Move photos from the "Google Photos" folder to a different folder, then delete them: they'll also be deleted in Google Photos.
    • Delete folders, including the "Google Photos" folder: the photos and videos in those folders will stay in Google Photos. This is to avoid deleting all your photos and videos by accident.
  • There are different ways to upload your family photos. You can use "Backup & Sync" or upload manually. I prefer to upload manually to avoid all kinds of issues. See this link.

Answer:

Hi, Truiy

Welcome to Google Photos Community Support Forum & thanks for your query.

To know what features the built-in photos editor you have on your phone, you will have to refer the documentation provided by the phone's manufacturer.

However, you can do so through the Google Photos companion app Snapseed.
To do so, please follow these steps.
  • Tao to open the photo
  • Tap Edit
  • Slide the menu bar with the leading tab "Suggestions" towards the left to reveal the option "More". Tap on that
  • Slide the menu bar with the leading tab "Markup" to reveal the option Snap seed. However, that will be available only when you have Snap Seed installed on your phone
  • Once in Snap Seed, tap on the Tools option in the bottom row,
  • On the next screen, tap on "rotate"
  • Now, in the bottom bar, you will see a filled and another hollow triangle juxtaposed. Tap on that.
  • That will create a mirror image. Save this new edit.

Answer:

Thank you so much for your response. Thing is I don't want to install additional apps, whether snap seed or any other. Is there a way a pic can be flipped using moto g's default photo editor? This seems to be quite a basic functionality and shouldn't require the installation of another app. Thanks!

Question: Seems like google synced my photos overnight and now theyre gone from my phone gallery

I've done all the things: cleared the cache, searched for nomedia etc. Google seemed to have  left some photos in my local photo storage, its all really confusing and I can't recover all my phones from google either, im unable to pick more than one at a time to restore and even then, they don't download into the correct files.

Answer:

Syncing photos from your phone to Google Photos does not delete them from the device. It uploads a copy. Something else must have happened.

"I'm unable to pick more than one at a time to restore"

In the mobile app, you can select more by pressing the first till it is selected and then swipe downwards to select a range.

and even then, they don't download into the correct files."
To my experience photos that are restored from trash go back to the Photos tab and if they were in an album, also to that album. I have no idea whether that still happens when you try to restore a long time after deleting.

Answer:

They aren't in the trash, they're just gone. The trash was the last place I've looked, ive even done the clearing the cache thing. Guess I'll just get them back from google photos

Answer:

@Victoria
As Jan said: Google does not remove anything from your phone, so you must have been misleaded by the automatic Free-up space notification that you were able to clean X GB and you simply have agreed with that without understanding and then most photos are removed from phonegallery and leave no trace in any trash.

So you have to learn that using Google Photos is a comfortable gallery also (pinch two fingers together to get day-view or month-view) and that you only need to download a single picture when needed for some special app. But even in Whatsapp you can reach your collection in Google Photos now - it took them 5 years to add that option via the 3 dots above the galleryview.
Besides: good quality photo-sharing (with comments) can be done much better straight from within Google Photos.

But for having 200 recents back in Gallery (but not in any album there), you can install the Google One app for free temporarily.
Just for a bit of old comfort because all other methods are too complicated due to bad design compared to the iPhone-version.
