I took some very nice looking and important videos yesterday from an event but they took up a lot of space in Google pictures and i could not recive emails because of it. I deleted them from the app to free the space up, but it deleted the videos from my gallery also. I only wanted to delete them from the cloud, i did not give permission to delete them from my phone. It would be really important to recover those videos if you can. I know there are some methods wich can recover my files even when they are deleted.

Google photos is designed that way, when you delete from Google photos it also removes photos and videos from any synced devices also. See: Delete or restore your photos & videos

If you deleted them recently you should be able to restore them from the trash. Instructions in the above help article.

Could you please confirm if you've followed the below steps to install Backup and Sync in your device?

To download and install Backup and Sync,click Download Backup and Sync.
Click Download Backup and Sync.

Move Backup and Sync to the Applications folder.
Open Backup and Sync.
Type your Google Account username and password to sign into Google Drive.

I'm recently having problems with a Moto Z2 running on Android 8. I take photos with the standard camera and with the Hasselblad zoom moto mod. Photos are sometime being backed up to a date in 1970 in Photos although if you look at the photo in the camera file, you will see that it displays the correct date. Yesterday, some photos taken in the morning backed up correctly as "today" - others taken later were backed up as if they were taken in 1970. The attached screen shots show the issue.

The first is from the camera apps file showing the correct date of August 15, 2019. The second is from the Google Photo backup showing a date in 1970. Google One support does not seem to be able to help with this. Any ideas - other than to change them all manually in Google Photos?

Unfortunately I don’t think we are going to be able to help you either. The first screenshot shows the system file date and time which matches the actual date taken. The second is after Google has processed the Exif metadata and indicates that the Hasselblad app has written incompatible Exif DateTimeTaken information which Google is translating to 1970

If you remove the zoom Moto mod and the date and time are as expected then you need to raise the issue with with Hasselblad support,

Picasa already was unsupported since 2016 (we all got that message - see Online Readme under Help), but last year they also disconnected Picasa from Gmail and Google Photos - that's why you can't sync anymore.

Probably you have started to use the Backup & Sync app, but that does not work like Picasa before and because the teenagers at Google have no history, they don't offer anything better for decent users.

How to work then with that terrible app?

The freeing up space action must have been over by now.

Nevertheless, you can bring back the pics to the gallery.
However, restoring the backed up pictures would be defeating the whole purpose of the free up space exercise.

To bring back the pics to your phone's gallery either, you can download photos one by one.

Regrettably, there is no option to do so on a batch of photos.

Alternatively, you can install the Google One app. There is a one time option to restore up to two hundred most recent photos to the device.

However, that will not restore the local folder structure.

There is no requirement to join Google One. The option is available to everyone.

However, the method may not be helpful to recover something when the count is more than two hundred.

Or, you can arrange for a bulk download by visiting the link https://takeout.google.com/.

Select the Google Photos app for data download.

Once the file is ready, you will get an email. Access that & unzip all the attachments into your phone's gallery.

That will bring everything to your phone.

Not only this, selecting multiple results in the order being completely scrambled. This means that to safely move your items, it must be done one by one. I used google takeout. My photos are original size.

The tool exports the photos into a .zip but upon extracting you find your photos have been broken up into a folders for everyday of the year. The only way I found to bypass this was to make an album of up to 500 photos and then download that album. This keeps all the photos in one folder.

My question is how can I download a copy of all my data in one folder not broken up into a folder for every single day of the year? I want to keep using cloud services but if I can't get a copy of my data easily then I'm pulling out.

Takeout was made for (and worked fine) Picasa Web Albums, where all photos were in user-made albums. Google puts them in day albums hence the big mess you find after downloading. Additional data may be in the .json files, but Google does not provide a tool to extract them and add them to the photos. ExifTool seems able to do it. Adding all photos to albums (you can have max 2000 pics in an album) seems the better way.

There are other download methods, but none is perfect. See this link.

I'm curious are you even a support person that can provide direct technical help about my data? Albums can only go up to 500 not 2000. If you even used the software you would know this. This puts me into the situation that I have to take my photos out of google photos in batches of 500 or use the "take out" tool which breaks your photos up into 1000+ folders. Bottom line I am not trusting google with my data at this point because you have had countless people complain on your forms about the off loading process yet nothing has change it appears in your software in several years it appears by dates of posts. That tells me this is just an attempt by google to make this process as hard as possible for data to be extracted.

It's beyond me why as I would keep using your service if I had direct access to make a copy of my entire data with out jumping through nightmare hoops.

Albums can contain 2000 photos, but you can only add in batches of 500, but I could download an album of >500 photos in one go.

So I appreciate all of the above comments - they are very informative, but they really don't answer my question. In an attempt to clarify:

I do not use the current Desktop Drive, and I do not wish to use the "Coming soon" Drive for desktop.

In my "old" backup & sync, I simply select the folders I wish to backup & sync, and they go directly to the Computer folder in GoogleDrive.com, and pictures also go to GooglePhotos.com. Please see my settings in the screen shot below.

As it's configured now, all 3 folders (Desktop, Documents, and Pictures) go to My Computer folder on GoogleDrive.com, and Pictures also go to Google Photos. I believe in this scenario storage space is doubled for pictures. Is that correct? And if correct, how do I get Pictures to back up to GooglePhotos without them going to GoogleDrive.com?

I tried un-ticking Pictures under My Computer in preferences, and leaving Photos ticked (see 2nd screen shot), but that resulted in photos not going to Drive nor to Photos.

In the old version of Backup & Sync and Drive for Desktop were exactly the same apps and they do what you describe and show. But as far as picturefiles are compatible with Photos, they only count for Photos. If not compatible, they stick on Drive only and will count for Drive.

So in general there was no double counting and in fact the content on Drive was your real backup because your folders were mirrored, while the stream on Photos just was additional for combining with the stream coming from your phone backup app (if you have one).

But as Peter pointed out: this old version is now exchanged gradually and on Mac that can take longer due to the historic setup of the Apple Photo-Library which makes things much more complicated.

And because you need the Drive backup as well as the Photos backup and then you get double counting for the pictures on Drive as well as on Photos - unless this is mistake in the preliminary version, because that would be a double punishment after leaving free unlimited storage on Photos since June 1.

Just to clarify, Backup and Sync will cease to exist at the end of September.

The only options from the 1st of October will be to either backup a folder to Google Drive or backup a folder to Google Photos or backup a folder to both. If there are folders which contain files and photos then they will need to be backed up to both and all the photos will count in full in Drive and at the Upload size chosen in Photos.

I guess Google expect that Documents will get backed up to Google Drive and Pictures will get backed up to Google Photos. I don’t store anything on Desktop so can’t help with that.

Actually, it is very smart to be careful!

If you see the "Backup complete" message (when you tap on your profile photo or icon), and you are not simultaneously using ~iCloud Photo Backup~, then you can safely use "Free up space" (available on the Utilities menu).. Note: there are some other ways that MAY be successful but this is the most straightforward and least likely to get confusing or messed up.

It is always a good idea to store important images in more than one place / tool. My photos are in Google Photos, on my laptop, and on multiple external disk drives (not connected to any computer or network). Remember you can use your charging cable to copy all images from an iOS device to a computer.

Please try clearing data and cache of the Photos app:

Tap the system Settings tab on the main screen of your device.
Tap the General section of settings that is on the far right.
Tap Storage in the General tab.
Clear the cache data once storage calculates the data.
Back out of the storage section.
Tap Applications and find the application in question.
Tap the application and clear the cache (if available).
Clear the data for the application if there is no cache to clear.
Exit the settings screen and restart the device.
