How do I remove the camera information in the bottom left of the photo it's really annoying. See orange box sometimes it's there and sometimes it isn't and I don't know why but I don't want it on my photos.

Answer:

That is caused by an ugly setting in your camera - it is not caused by Google Photos.
Of course your can use the editor in Google Photos to crop away the lower part of the image, but that maybe a too large part. So if you can shoot the same photos again after correcting the setting (maybe called "watermark"), that wouild be the best solution.
Good luck

A friend of mine insists she has lost all her Google Photo backups and everything from her Google Drive. It's all empty and nothing in the trash. She had some cellphone get destroyed and got another one and always forgets and messes up her passwords, but she says she is in the right account and there is nothing there any more. And I just don't believe that. I searched and saw some people complain about some auto photos and albums getting lost but not everything completely. Is this a known issue? I am sure Google has backups of everything, is there any way to recover something like that?

Answer:

Google is very safe, but people are unsafe and your account is the only key. But most mess-up with that because with a Gmail-account you don't think on photos and documents and maybe you even don't use gmail for daily mailing either and then it just is an abstract system account for Android.
But I always have used the same account (adress + password) in 15 years, I never have lost anything unless deleted by myselef in full conciousness :-)
So her story is very unlikely because it is not easy at all to clean-up Photos and Drive in a dull second.
But it also can be that she never has had anything relevant there due to wrong use.
Just volunteers here - and Google has no phonenumber for unpaying users either.
Sorry

There is a lot of discussion, that links to Google Photos (GP) might not be persistent:

Is there any best pactice/advice which link to use, to make sure, that the Google photo can be opened "forever" from the documents and its copies (PDFs, Word, ...).

(1)
Some say, that the URL showing in GP (easiest method):
could vanish any time (it also requires log-in).

(2)
The links created with the GP share button:
https://photos.app.goo.gl/73Kao11vfXXXqUGQ7
are also recommended.
This link require no log-in (I believe)

(3)
Some experts  recommend using only the "deep link" created by opening the (hidden) album created in (2) and using the address of the GP it contains:
https://photos.google.com/u/0/share/AF1QipN9o5HGYEMGKtCCNZ3Pq78uzaMrneZiLXdoBdc83ATO9GJ8YdmSfnY_MyBc-WCzMw/photo/AF1QipPIxxEqdk3nlX9KXXXYWlTY20vKaMI6iKNEqdty?key=cXN1cmQ2U1BtM3R6UWpabHdEVXNXVTBCSml0b3l3

There are also extension that create this deep links.

What is most reliable here?

Answer:

Only method 2 is correct, but because no log-in is requirements (unless for certain actions), albums should should be shared with trusted and non-stupid people only.

Method 3 maybe usable for IT-engineers, but Google Photos is meant for normal people :-)

Answer:

Thank You.

(A)
In my tests I can copy the link from method 1 into Google Docs and later watch the photo by clicking it.
If I do not like the clunky text, I can easily replace it with something meaningful (Ctrl+K).
Therefore, method 1 works here and is much easier then getting the album link first (4 more clicks).
Also method 1 opens the photo in the browser with immediate access to my original comment and the editing functions.  I can also immediately check the next and prior photos, because I jumped into my collection.

Method 2 opens the photo in an single photo album in the the app.
It provides the commenting and notification functionalities instead, not needed, if I am the only user of the document with the photos. In this case the comment and the editing and browsing options of method 1 are more useful.

So there are use cases, method 1 is superior, provided the link is reliable.

(B)
Am I right, that neither a link according method 1 nor method 2 is accepted by Google Docs
Insert / Picture / by URL method from the menu?
How do I insert a Google photo then into a Google Doc?

Did the (normal) URLs, a Google photo shows in the browser ever change (so that they cannot be considered persisitent) or are the deep link or share link recommendations rather Techie/for commenting preferences?

Answer:

Sorry, I can't add more then already said.

When I create Google Docs, I always insert the real photo(s), either from computer or from Google Photos (or Drive) because my stories often are important for other people and don't want that they are dependant on my stupid mistakes in the cloud or on my phone causing that links are not operating anymore.
But if have no problem to insert a short link like shown in method 2 in my text.
Can also be done here if needed :-)
But the extreme links in method 1 (or 3) maybe to much for your documents - no idea what you want.

PS: I can't proof that the link of method 1 will not work over a year anymore, but I do think that this has to do with websecurity. Also see our resources

Answer:

Thank You.

I also can insert a short link like shown in method 2 in my text.
What I meant is, that neither this link nor the direct URL of the photo (method 1) can be used to insert a photo (as its image) into Google Docs, using the Google Docs command:
Insert / Picture / by URL
from the Google Docs menu

So I wonder, if this method (by URL) can be used also for Google photos.

The question came up, because the Google Docs command:
Insert / Picture / from Google Photos
did not work for me.

Meanwhile I found out that an extension was the culprit.

Answer:

I don't understand about which extension you are talking.

But when I need to insert a link (whatever link) in a Google Doc, I never go to Insert / Pictures / from URL, but I just use the link-icon in the toolbar without any problem - apart from extreme links I never use.

Answer:

There is a fundamental difference betwwen these two commands.

For URLs the link symbol does pretty much the same as Ctrl-K or just Paste (Ctrl-V) the URL into the GDoc (unless the display text should be different).

or here (with Ctrl+K and an display text set)  shows the same URL

Whereas Insert / Picture / by URL  inserts the image, the link is pointing to into the GDoc (between the lines or recently also floating).

I did not find out yet, which Chrome extension causes the problem with Insert / Picture / from Google Photos in GDoc, since I use quite a few.
Please check my post Extension causing problems with inserting GFotos into GDocs - I will post the culprit.

Answer:

Coming back to my original post, I still wonder how persisitent the simple links (method 1) to my Google photos are, because I could prefer this simple method of pointig to Google photos for my own documents.

The advantages are:
  • no additional 4 clicks to create the shared (album) link
  • jumps right into the photo collection (instead of an album with the picture) and therefore allows to browse back- and forward in time around that particular moment
  • no cluttering of the collection and the images info pane to the right with usleless "share albums
(if an important photo is shared N-times during a year - N entries show up here)
  • method 2 opens an empty redirecting Chrome Tab and only then the GF-App showing the image
    (in an shared album)
The Tab only shows: Redirecting you to https://photos.app.goo.gl/PXWqBAEee5XXXjnc8
I do not see a way to avoid the generation of this useless empty redirecting Tabs
  • ...?

Answer:

The resources post you referred to was interesting.
It reveals even more types of links by recommending to use the address provided by a right click into a photo and Copy image address

So the options according my understanding are now (renumbered from 10):

Open the Photo in GF
(10a) copying the image adress from the address bar
(10b) copying the image adress via right click into the photo and Copy image address

(11) link generated with the GF share link function (actually pointing to an hidden album with the photo)

opening the photo in this album
(12a) copying the image adress from the address bar
(12b) copying the image adress via right click into the photo and Copy image address

The easiest one is 10a (Alt+D; Ctrl+C).

I wonder, if Google somewhere provides clear guidance, which type of links to use (=will work forever) ...

Answer:

I did some more testing to find, which links open Google photos reliably and without log-In
(I tested the latter with an incognito browser).
The best way is to create an album with the image(s) and to Get a link (0.) to this album.'
Once the album is open to links this way (chain symbol, shows up), open the photo.
Now two types of links to the photo can be created:
  1. the URL in the address bar of the photo
    https://photos.google.com/u/0/share/[HASH]/photo/[HASH]?key=[HASH]
  2. the URL from the right click into the photo and Copy image address
    https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/[HASH]=w272-h151-no?authuser=0
this link can be nicely created with the Photos Direct Link Chrome extension
(it requires only a left click into the photo this way)
Link (1) opens the photo in the album (browsing is possible with left/right).
The Info pane is also available, as well as Slideshow and Download in the 3-dots menu.

Link (2) only opens the particular photo without the Info pane or the 3-dots menu.

The "chain" album in essential for the links, once deleted all links fail.
It can be hidden from the normal albums (3 dots menu), which is therefore a good idea.
I don't see a way to retrieve an deleted album - probably all links remain broken.

=w272-h151 determines the size of the photo.
The extension Photos Direct Link allows to set this size and changes this parameters accordingly in the link.

Probably these are the most reliable links to photos not requiring a Log-In.

The original link (0.) opens the album instead of a photo and allows a commenting/additional photos thread to the right for the owner of the photo or invited accounts (with notifications).

If Get a link is asked for photos (instead of an album as above), GP crates a "chain" album deeply hidden in
They can be reached also from https://photos.google.com/u/0/sharing via Other shared links.
They are all "chain" albums containing the photos and can be renamed and Show(n) in Library.
The same options to create link to photos (1) and (2) apply.

Maybe this is helpful...

I want to transfer photos from Google Photos to my iMac photos application.

Of course that's not logical: you should use iCloud - then you would have no problems at all.

Google Photos is not able to downsync to your computer, unless by manual downloading and unzipping to get the files on pc - but these already will be not the originals if you have chosen High Quality.

So why don't you connect your iPhone to you computer weekly to download originals for builbing a neat collection on your iMac and yust use Google Photos for popular sharing and viewing on mobile devices mainly and a bit of primary safety.

Question: How do I transfer a picture that is on my phone onto my computer?

Hi, Elaine Bohlmeyer

Welcome to Google Photos Community Support Forum & thanks for your query.

The easiest way to transfer the photos from the phone to a PC is by connecting through the USB port.
Once done, select the option of "Data transfer" out of the ones offered by the pop-up message that flashes the moment you connect your phone to the PC.

Nevertheless, if you have freed up space on your phone, you can do so through Google Photos using the following options.

You can download photos by accessing the link https://photos.google.com through any browser on your PC. Select multiple pics through the combination of shift key + mouse & tap the three dots to see the download option.

Or, you can arrange for a bulk download by visiting the link https://takeout.google.com/
Select the Google Photos app for data download.
Once the file is ready, you will get an email. Access that & unzip all the attachments on your hard disk.

Hello Pixel Pete,

We are not aware of any Google plans to replace this functionality.  For new photos taken on mobile I have the OneDrive app installed with settings to upload new photos to the OneDrive cloud where they go into the camera roll. I have the camera roll synced to my HD where I manually move them to add to my photo archive.

Moving them deletes from OneDrive where they are stored in the recycle folder for 30 days.

Deleting from OneDrive does not delete from the mobile device.

I made sure my google photos had every picture and made sure all was backed up before I activated new iPhone. When new phone was activated, google photos had deleted ALL of my pictures. What went wrong? What did I miss?

Answer:

Hi there,

Welcome to the Google Photos Help Community.

I certainly understand how important those files to you. Could you please confirm, is the photos missing on both web version of the Google Photos (photos.google.com) and the Google Photos App as well?

Just a heads up: If the photos aren't available in photos.google.com then it looks like the photos aren't backed up properly to your Google Photos account.

Incase if your Google Photos aren't synced on your new phone, there might be a possibility that your account isn't set to sync. Go to your main mobile Settings > Accounts > your Google Account and check if the Google Photos is set to sync.

Meanwhile, as you're unable to find your photos, I'd suggest you check your internet connect and speed. Also, please check for the following things:

1. Can you see them via Picasa?
2. Are they in the trash?
3. Check the Assistant for the status of your backups.
4. Ensure you are logged in to the correct Google account.

If you see your old ones, but not the recent photos & videos then your photos and videos might still be loading. We recommend checking again in 1-2 more days.

Also, try checking the missing photos on Google Photos library. Incase, if you might have moved the photos to trash, it will not automatically removed from:
  • Blogger
  • YouTube
  • Gmail
  • Google+
If you don't find the photos, I'd recommend you look for your photos here, signing in with all your Google accounts if you have more than one.

If you still can't find your photos, then unfortunately there isn't a way to retrieve them. I'd also recommend you contact the Google Drive support team as they can restore photos up to 21 days after deletion if the photos are available in the Google Drive. You can click the "Missing or deleted files" entry of the  and request a phone call or any other option that works for you.

Check out these handy help center articles for more information on how to "See if you can restore deleted photos& videos" and "Find missing photos & videos".

Keep me posted.

Best,
Sonya
