I'm using Mac + "Backup & Sync" to upload photos to Google Photo for quite a long time. I was happy that Google Photo compressed the image and want to save storage space. 

However, Google Photo never compressed the image and reported that I have "Large photos & videos" these days.

I checked the setting on "Back up and Sync" and confirmed I set it as "Storage Saver Quality.

I also manually upload the photos/videos via the Web, but Google never compressed the photos/videos.

Also, I tried the "Recover Storage" option and tried to compress those photos/videos, but those images are remained as "Large Photos & videos".

I really want to save space and hope that Google Photo compressed the image like before.

I tried to find a solution, but couldn't find it. Your help on this matter is greatly appreciated!

The compression varies over a large range depending on the contents of the pictures. 

So the indication "200 MB" says nothing because that are pictures over 5 MB over years - you should look to the individual values in the infopanels on photos.google.com after June 1 compared to the files on your computer and write down the numbers of at least 10. 

I see this (don't look to the yellow bars): 

My camera is just under 16 MP, so there is no additional compression in MP"s. 

The average compression in filesize is about a factor 2 and in this small testseries the content did not vary very much, but with more random pictures the factor easily can vary between 1.5 and 5. 

So I have no indication that there is something wrong at Google. You just were misleaded by the recent information on https://photos.google.com/quotamanagement

PS: the graphics can be seen on the forumsite only.

I opened Large Photos & Videos. My Digital Camera is 20MP and the file size is relatively big.  Google Photo used to compress those photos properly, but it seems like keeping the original size these days. 

I tried to compress those images manually using "Recover Storage\

200 MB for some large files is nothing - these are not compressed very strongly. 

It would become alarming if the value was 2 GB or more. 

You need to look to a couple of individual images on photos.google.com with their sidepanels opened like shown below: 

 

 

If the MP-value is 16 instead of 20, you immediately can see that this file is compressed. But for some the MB value still can be quite high if the image has many fine details.

The average value for 16 MP will be around 5 MB and if uploaded before June 1, that amount was not counted. 

Hopefully this viewing will convince you that there is nothing wrong at Google. 

 

PS: if your originals are raw-files of about 20 MB, then these will be converted into much smaller jpg-files - just download a few to check this.

It could be that they were never compressed, but were simply rated at 0 bytes.

 

You can check pre June uploads to see if the 20MP remains, which will confirm that the compression didn't happen.

I checked the image before June 1st, and found out Google never compressed images! Resolution/file size are the same as the original, which I was really surprised. So, I learned that Google never compressed the image (even before June 1st) and may have counted as 0 bytes in terms of storage usage.  

I hope that those are compressed since it eats up space very quickly ...

In the Google Photos iOS App, go to the photo which contains the unrecognized person. Tap the 3 dot menu, click the pencil icon by people (it should say # faces available to add), tap the + icon for the person you want to add. Confirm the creation.

Look for the Snapchat-folder under Pictures on device on the Library-page and then open that folder and switch-on backup. That's all. 

But you should be aware that social media have low quality and strip all data, so they will land at random dates between your own camera-shoots. 

Folders don't create albums at Google Photos automatically, so also can do that yourself by not switching-on autobackup, but by being selective and then hit the + to add them to an album you have named Snapchat the first time. Then you also are able to hide them from your mainstream by archiving.

Please review the following information in case there are any options you haven't yet tried. 

1. Check your online account - photos.google.com

If your photos were successfully uploaded to your online Google Photos account they may be available there. Try visiting photos.google.com and searching for them. If you have more than on

2. Check the trash - photos.google.com/trash

Once you delete photos from your Google Photos account, they're moved to Trash for the next 60 days. If you deleted them by mistake you can always restore them from the Trash folder within those 60 days. Here's the link explaining how to recover them from Trash. If you have more than one Google account, check the trash for all of them.

 

If you accessed the Trash and manually sent the photos for permanent deletion, or if the 60 days expired, there is no way to recover them from Google Photos. 

 

3. Review other options

• if you previously used Picasa, visit picasaweb.google.com and search for your photos. 
• have you made any backups of the photos on your phone, camera, computer, or elsewhere?
• there is a small chance that you can restore the photos using a recover deleted photos app (Android). I haven't used them myself so have no specific recommendations. There may well be more app options if you visit the appropriate app store and try other search terms. I don't see any similar apps on the iOS store, but you could check yourself. 
• you can contact the Google Drive support team to see if any deleted files may be recovered. Use the Google Drive contact form, click Missing or deleted files, select a contact option, and be sure to tell them you permanently deleted files in Google Drive.
• If you ever shared the photos with anyone else, it's possible they may have a copy they could share back or send to you.

You can search with all words of both names. That may give the result you want, or more when the names are'nt specific enough. For example when the person is called "John" it will also find pics in an album with John in the title, without John being shown. Names should be more specific, like "John Doe"
