Progress made so far to prepare for the next Kim-Trump summit: Pompeo - Duration: 1:45.

With the conclusion of three-day working-level talks in Sweden between senior officials of

North Korea and the United States,...

America's top diplomat says progress has been made to prepare for the next meeting between

their two leaders.

Mike Pompeo also explained that the second summit will serve as a "good marker" for both

sides.

Kim Hyo-sun reports.

U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo expressed his expectations for further progress in North

Korea's denuclearization during the next Pyeongyang-Washington summit, scheduled for late next month.

Addressing the World Economic Forum in Davos via satellite link on Tuesday,... Pompeo explained

that the second summit will serve as a (quote) "good marker" for the two sides.

He also said progress was made when North Korea's top nuclear envoy Kim Yong-chol visited

Washington last week,... and that positive results were reached during recent working-level

talks in Sweden.

However, he added that numerous tasks lie ahead,... hinting there are certain obstacles

to overcome in preparing the second summit between North Korean leader Kim Jong-un and

U.S. President Donald Trump.

Meanwhile, the delegations from North Korea and the U.S. who took part in the working-level

talks to prepare for the second summit returned to their respective countries on Tuesday,

local time.

Despite the extensive three-day meeting just outside Stockholm,... experts say the two

sides will continue to meet for the next month to prepare for the summit.

As many speculate the officials will probably meet again at the inter-Korean truce village

of Panmunjom,... it's left to be seen how South Korea can act as mediator between Pyeongyang

and Washington.

Trump takes students side in racially charged DC protest controversy CNNPolitics - Duration: 1:36.

Trump takes students side in racially charged DC protest controversy CNNPolitics

A video spread over the weekend showed Nick Sandmann, along with his classmates at Covington Catholic High School in Kentucky, who were in Washington, DC, for the annual March for Life rally, staring down Nathan Phillips, an Omaha tribe leader, as he played his drum and chanted. The video attracted outrage on social media, where many accused the students of mocking Phillips, he felt threatened. Twitter has an account that helped spread the encounter after CNN asked questions about the accounts authenticity.

As people reacted to the one video, others sprung to the students defense, and a of the event shows the students were earlier taunted by a group identifying themselves as black Israelites, who hurled profane and inflammatory comments at them.

The students several of whom were wearing caps adorned with Trumps campaign slogan, "Make America Great Again" have disputed that they were mocking Phillips, and several conservative outlets have championed their version of events.

Trump first waded into the controversy Monday night in response to such a point raised by Fox News host Tucker Carlson, saying the students were "treated unfairly" with early judgments by the media, though he didnt cite examples.

He continued that argument Tuesday morning.

"Nick Sandmann and the students of Covington have become symbols of Fake News and how evil it can be," Trump tweeted Tuesday morning. "They have captivated the attention of the world, and I know they will use it for the good maybe even to bring people together. It started off unpleasant, but can end in a dream!"

Trumps decision to insert himself into a sensitive and disputed racial controversy is consistent with previous actions hes taken as President. He seized on the controversy of mostly black NFL players kneeling during the National Anthem to protest police brutality, and he was widely criticized for equating the actions of white supremacists at a 2017 rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, with people who were there protesting them.

Trump offer to end government shutdown, build wall faces Senate vote - Duration: 3:31.

Trump offer to end government shutdown, build wall faces Senate vote

Even as the record long government shutdown hit its 32nd day Tuesday and 800,000 federal workers face a second round of missed paychecks, Congress is unlikely to pass a bill this week to end the closure.

The Senate released a bill Monday to reopen the unfunded quarter of the government. While the chamber plans to take up the measure later this week, it will almost certainly fail to meet the 60 vote threshold — again leaving lawmakers at an impasse over the presidents proposed border wall.

The bill would put dollar 5.7 billion toward building barriers on the U.S. Mexico border, along with funding for technology to find drugs at ports, thousands more border patrol agents and new immigration judges. In an attempt to earn Democratic support, Trump offered to extend legal protections for immigrants brought to the U.S. illegally as children, as well as people fleeing humanitarian disasters, for three years. The measure would also include nearly dollar 13 billion in disaster relief funding.

The proposal is unlikely to get the seven Democratic votes needed to pass the Senate. The partys leaders opposed Trumps offer even before he outlined it on Saturday, calling it insufficient or a worse version of a previous immigration deal that crumbled. No Democrats offered support for the deal over the weekend — not even the centrist senators who represent pro Trump states.

No clear path to ending the shutdown has emerged, even as already cash strapped federal employees face their second lost paychecks starting Friday. If the impasse drags on, and .

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell cast the offer Tuesday as "the only proposal ... currently before us that could be signed by the president and immediately reopen the government."

Americans . In December, the president said he would be "proud to shut down the government for border security" and "take the mantle" if funding lapsed. On Tuesday, he pledged not to back down from his wall demand as Democrats flatly refuse to pass funding for the project.

"Without a Wall our Country can never have Border or National Security," Trump claimed in a tweet Tuesday morning. He added: "The Dems know this but want to play political games."

Trump now has to balance the appearance of good faith immigration talks with Democrats and criticism from conservatives who accuse him of offering "amnesty." On Saturday, he cast his proposal as "straightforward, fair, reasonable and common sense" with "lots of compromise."

But on Sunday, as he faced backlash from conservatives, the president wrote: "No, Amnesty is not a part of my offer. It is a 3 year extension of DACA. Amnesty will be used only on a much bigger deal, whether on immigration or something else." He also suggested he could deport the roughly 11 million people living in the U.S. illegally if House Speaker does not give in to his demands.

"Likewise there will be no big push to remove the 11,000,000 plus people who are here illegally but be careful Nancy!" he wrote.

Democrats have urged Trump to support legislation to temporarily reopen the government while lawmakers negotiate border security. But the president has repeatedly said he will not end the closure without funding for the wall.

In a statement Saturday, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said Trump "keeps putting forward one sided and ineffective remedies." The presidents offer "is not a compromise but more hostage taking," the New York Democrat said.

"Theres only one way out: open up the government, Mr. President, and then Democrats and Republicans can have a civil discussion and come up with bipartisan solutions," he said.

Meanwhile, McConnell has pledged to only take up bills Trump supports. In a tweet Tuesday, Trump claimed he had "never seen" McConnell and Senate Republicans "so united on an issue." At least four GOP senators — Cory Gardner of Colorado, Susan Collins of Maine, Lisa Murkowski of Alaska and Lindsey Graham of South Carolina — have shown support for funding the government for a time while immigration talks continue.

The Democratic controlled House has passed various bills to fund closed parts of the government. The party broadly supports a plan to open eight departments through September and a ninth, the Department of Homeland Security, only for a few weeks to allow further negotiations on immigration.

Democrats have tried to get McConnell to approve the House passed bills, to no avail. Trump has shown no willingness to take that path yet.

McConnells office did not say Tuesday when exactly the chamber is expected to vote on Trumps offer to end the shutdown.

Experts Fear Global Recession As Trump's Policies Tank Economy - Duration: 3:04.

The International Monetary Fund is kind of sounding the alarm bells right now because

they have had to, once again adjust their economic growth forecasts downward because

they see the global economy shrinking and retracting right now and they've laid out

several issues where they, that they say these are partly responsible, you know, some part

for each of them for this global economic slowdown, and two are the things that they

have pinpointed are one, obviously the government shut down here in the United States having

huge economic consequences for us, which then spreads throughout the globe, but the second

and probably more important than just the shutdown are donald Trump's trade wars, his

trade war, specifically.

Those with China are creating a global tension right now according to the IMF that is causing

a retraction in economic activity, not just in the US, not just in China, but all over

the world.

You know, something as seemingly simple as Trump.

Putting tariffs on Chinese goods has impacts all around the globe and they're not good

impacts, right?

This isn't helping anybody.

It's not helping us here in the US because we're the ones who those costs are passed

along to and we ended up having to pay it.

Why?

Because there are plenty of goods that come from China that were either unable to produce

in the United States at least in the mass quantities that we need to purchase them or

to.

We simply don't have the operations here that are producing those, so even when he slaps

them with tariffs and then they pass those prices onto us in the form of price increases

to make up for it, we still have to pay them so we lose even more money.

I never doubt that the citizens of the United States are the ones who are paying for this

trade war.

Couple that with the government shutdown in the reduced spending power of 800,000 people

and the businesses who depended upon them and the ripple effects continue.

China right now is experiencing their own economic slow down.

That is not completely related to the trade wars.

Part of it is, but a lot of it just has to do with the fact that their economy right

now is shrinking.

Also have to factor in what's happening with brexit right now.

The will they won't they, their governments in shambles as well kind of situation and

overall we're creating an economy across the globe that is poised for economic collapse

or at the very least, that is what the experts, the people who do this for living, are trying

to warn us about the horrid policies in the UK.

The shrinking Chinese economy and the horrendous policies coming from Donald Trump himself

are having global impacts that are going to affect each and every citizen of planet earth.

Giuliani Accidentally Reveals The Existence Of Trump Tapes - Duration: 8:02.

Rudy Giuliani has not had a good couple of days and in fact every time he speaks to a

reporter or a TV host, he just seems to be making things worse for the president.

See you on Sunday.

Giuliani.

Spoke to both the times and to, uh, NBC's Meet the Press where he mentioned that Donald

Trump's Trump tower Moscow meetings or talks or negotiations or whatever it was.

Yeah.

Those weren't on throughout Donald Trump's entire presidential campaign contradicting

what Trump himself and the rest of the administration had been saying for months.

They said, no, this ended before he even ran for president.

Then Giuliani goes out there.

Tools, multiple different outlets that.

No, no, no.

They were, they were doing this the whole time.

The entire time he was running for president, they were still trying to make this deal happen,

which as many of us know, this deal is obviously the kind of centerpiece of potential collusion.

Maybe this was used as leverage by one party over the other.

Who knows, but Giuliani says, yeah, they, they never stopped talking about that.

And then later in the day he had to come out and say why?

Yeah, I was, I was wrong about that.

I, I was, I was speaking hypothetically, is what he said.

He says this was hypothetical.

So they were only hypothetically still talking about Trump tower all throughout the campaign.

I don't think that Giuliani knows what hypothetical means.

Uh, but sure.

Okay.

Why not?

Yeah, it was hypothetical.

They weren't actually talking, but they could have hypothetically been talking.

Uh, and then he made things even worse than that, if you can imagine it.

He spoke to the New Yorker in an interview published on Monday, uh, where he was talking

about the Buzzfeed story with Michael Cohen.

And he said, I knew from the start that this Koan story was bogus because I've heard all

the tapes.

In fact, this is exactly, exactly what he says.

Ah, I've been through all the tapes.

I have been through all the techs.

I have been through all the emails and I knew none existed.

None existed.

Being instances of Trump telling Cohen to lie.

And then basically when the special counsel said that, just in case there are any others

I might not know about, they probably went through others and found the same thing to

which the reporter then asked, wait, what?

What tapes have you gone through in Giuliani responds, I shouldn't have said tapes.

They allege there were texts and emails that corroborated that Cohen was saying that the

president told him to lie.

There were no texts, there were no emails on the president, never told him to lie.

Reporter then follows up.

So there were no tapes he listened to though Giuliani says no tapes.

Well, I have listened to tapes, but none of them concerned this.

So there's tapes but there's not tapes.

But there are tapes.

But they don't talk about this specific instance.

Again, another big thing that we've been wondering about all of these investigations and all

of the shady things that Cohen did on behalf of Donald Trump is whether or not Cohen actually

recorded the conversations.

Michael Cohen was a guy who liked to record things.

We've heard a couple of the recording's already and now Giuliani comes out and accidentally

admits like, yeah, I've listened to all these tapes that, oh crap, they don't exist, nevermind.

Sorry, but they are real, but they're not about this there about other things and Mueller

has the tapes and he probably listened to them too.

That's a pretty big deal, right?

I mean, this guy not only just admitted that what we'd all suspected is in fact true, but

he also just kind of negated a lot of talking points from the administration and he is supposed

to be the one out here representing Donald Trump and saving him from all of this nonsense.

Now, just a quick point about that buzz feed story just to you calm everybody's nerves

because right now you still have people saying no, no, no.

Every, every bit of it's true.

Probably accept maybe like one thing.

And then others who say, no, Buzzfeed's totally busted on this.

I'm just going to tell a quick story.

During the Watergate era, when they were doing those investigations, Woodward Bernstein put

out a story before the massive one came out, uh, alleging a lot of things that happen.

They spoke to a source and they reported that the source had, uh, said some things in a

testimony to a grand jury and they reported them.

But then here's the thing, the grand jury or a special prosecutor to come out and say,

no, this isn't true.

This did not happen.

So what order Bernstein, you know, this was before they got huge and famous.

They were crushed.

They thought for certain that their entire Watergate thing was based on lies and that

it wasn't going to a bear.

Any fruit here.

Turns out the reason the special prosecutor's office came out and debunked there story was

because that information was never given during testimony that was given during another circumstance.

So that was the only part of the story that was wrong.

And when you look at Mueller's offices, uh, you know, saying this story's not true in

some regards.

It could be something as simple as that.

It could be.

Well, they said it came from texts and emails when in fact it came from tapes that would

make their story technically factually inaccurate and that they did not gather that information

in the manner in which Buzzfeed reported, so there is that.

It could also mean that everything Buzzfeed said was an absolute lie.

We don't know.

We won't know until the end of this investigation, but for the time being, it's best to just

understand that we don't know what's true from that, so put it aside for now.

Nonetheless, the more Rudy Giuliani goes out there and talks the worst, he's going to make

things for president of the United States, and that is what we should be focusing on

right now because over the last three days, Giuliani has either intentionally accidentally,

perhaps he's a double agent working for Trump, who knows at this point, but that guy has

seriously slaughtered multiple talking points from this administration just because of his

sheer stupidity.

MASSIVE ANNOUNCEMENT ,TRUMP COMPLETELY DESTR0YS SESSIONS - Duration: 10:40.

MASSIVE ANNOUNCEMENT ,TRUMP COMPLETELY DESTR0YS SESSIONS

president Trump sounding off the commander-in-chief blasting Attorney General Jeff Sessions in

an interview with the hill saying this quote I don't have

an attorney general it's very sad the president long disappointed with

sessions over his decision very early on in the administration to recuse himself from

the Russia investigation he also expressed frustration with sessions in other

areas saying I'm not happy at the border I'm not happy with numerous

things not just this here now brie Payton a staff writer for the Federalist

brie is there any way that sessions can stay on as Attorney General after the midterms

yeah I mean really that's the question of the hour and I do think the political

makeup in Congress is going to really determine that right I mean if

the Republicans are able to hold the majority in the Senate I think that that's going to

be a key factor in whether or not Jeff Sessions does indeed stay

I think that if Republicans do you know regain control of the Senate I

think that we could easily see a different person get confirmed in that spot but I think

that right now the math is purely political and I think Donald Trump

understands that and I think

perhaps the reason why he hasn't yet fired jeff sessions or gotten rid of him or you

know acted upon all of these verbal outbursts that he's been expressing

over the past couple of months I think that you know he

understands that it's political and he's looking ahead at November looking ahead at the midterms

and understands that he needs to be strategic here well given the

fight of our Brett Kavanaugh being appointed to the Supreme Court at this

point it looks so smart that the president hasn't moved to fire jeff

Sessions because getting him getting another Attorney General confirmed even though it

seemed like just several weeks ago Chuck Grassley before these developments

with the Cavanaugh

appointment it seemed like Grassley had opened the door to possibly hearing about a replacement

for Jeff Sessions but again smart move in hindsight yeah absolutely

yeah I mean again this is all politics at this point and right now

definitely the recent developments with Kevin all these accusations that have been made

against him have definitely thrown a monkey wrench into a lot of plans

of people on the hill I mean Republicans are looking at

potentially a narrow window in which they have in order to pass a bunch of legislation

and kind of cement the Republican legacy right I mean they've been

able to have control of both houses and the presidency and that could very

well and easily change in November so

they have a short window of being able to pass a bunch of legislation and kind of cement

that legacy so I think it is clear that you know it's all political at

this point putting aside the the politics of the

situation do you do you feel that the sessions has run the department well it seems like

the bureaucracy is running him more than he is running the bureaucracy

and in term and a lot of issues not just the border but all of

these investigations he what's happening there why you know it's one thing to recuse yourself

from Russia but they're a whole lot of other things he could have

done to reshape that they're turning over the data of the documents

that the Congress has everything jason Chaffetz has talked about Bryan Pagliano basically

turned his back on two subpoenas from the Oversight Committee and

Chaffetz himself went to Jeff sets and just said you got a equal

application of the law here you've got to prosecute this guy for not showing up for

these two subpoenas and Jeff Sessions went I'm not going to do that that's

a clinton a clinton guy so bri answer Steve's question yeah I

definitely think that it's become abundantly clear in these releases earlier releases of

text messages and emails and you know o IG investigations

I think it's clear that there's a faction of employees within the FBI that have you

know clearly acted kind of gone rogue and done their own thing and done what

they wanted to do and I think that we're definitely the dynamic between

sessions and rod Rosenstein wall the Moller investigation you know is under

way I think it is clear that there is a flank of the FBI that sessions does not have control

over but I do think that sessions throughout his tenure in office has

executed other aspects of Donald Trump's legacy and agenda right I mean

cracking down on the border protecting religious liberty and doing other things like that

so there that sessions is in the same mind I want to get to this real quickly I bid to

stop Nancy Pelosi a group of House Democrats have signed a letter to change

rules for electing Speaker bring your reaction to this move to make sure

Pelosi doesn't regain her formal role yeah I'm not at all surprised I mean Democrats

have been speaking out that

there needs to be leadership changed particularly among the house for I mean probably a year

and a half right now right with Linda Sanchez kind of kicking off

that firestorm against Nancy Pelosi so I definitely am not at all surprised

by this and remember when Nancy Pelosi and her kind of quasi filibuster in order to push

individuals to vote a certain way when it came to shutting down

the government in order to protect the dreamers her entire caucus virtually

voted against her while she was trying to do that and she tried to save face later on

by saying yeah I was filibustering for this one thing but I really

wanted the complete opposite outcome it's clear that you know her

caucus doesn't respect her in this and the only reason why they kept her in

that role is because she's such a good fundraiser it's like taking your mom with you to the

mall wait I want to get I want to get Maria in here she is this incredible

fundraiser them read do you think she stays if do you think that

what happens if the Democrats do you take the house I think there will be a big leadership

fight that Nancy Pelosi has never had to face the challenge is that

there's not a natural successor Joe Crowley actually was one I really wanted

him to be the next speaker and he will not be in the next Congress so right now there's

a lot of jockeying inside the Democratic caucus to see who could replace

Nancy Pelosi as a Democrat what I don't want is the first thing we do if

we take the house get into a really

nasty leadership fight Nancy Pelosi is a historic figure I do though think it's time for new

leadership the Republicans are gonna get it Paul Ryan's leaving you know

I know you know that she's gonna use her gender as a sword and a stick to

whack people with she's gonna use it as a immuno shield and then a stick a woman may

run against her because the wealthy yeah at the end of the day you have

to run somebody against her and we're worrying that caucus what kind of

public persona is gonna be out there all right and being able to raise money is a big thing

so if that's all she's good at that's being so could vote counting though

inside the

caucus and there but there are other people now who are raising money there are other

people who are stepping up there's just not one one person everyone's

getting behind yeah but there's only one person who said there's

two thousand dollar bonuses crumbs pathetic I think never letting it go no because you

know what two thousand dollars is not crumbs to anybody in this country

that's great bumper sticker though every paid thank you so much good

to see bring meanwhile political storm here know the sort of storm here the president

blasting his Attorney General yet again repeated charges against what he's

doing that's hurting lawmakers on his side to the federal is senior editor

Molly Hemingway update me on the president's beef with sessions on this

well there are so many problems that President Trump has with sessions and some of them are

quite legitimate recently though he tweeted that he was opposed

that the Department of Justice had indicted two sitting congressmen so

soon before an election and that these were safe seats that Republicans held and so it

was sort of politically inappropriate to go after them at this time

it is true that the Department of Justice generally used to try to avoid

indicted people right before elections that's something that's kind of gone away in recent

years but this is ridiculous that you would say that one of

the reasons why you shouldn't go after them is because they were in safe

safe districts for your political party that's just as bad as when the

Department of Justice was politicized under President Obama when he would say that Eric

Holder was his wingman or when he weighed in on the Clinton investigation

while she was still being investigated so just generally a lot of

blame to go around here um be that as it may obviously the president isn't firing him and

it's pretty clear the jetsons isn't offering to quit maybe other stuff is

going behind the scenes that I'm not seeing but this is weird the whole thing

is weird well what's really weird is that our Attorney General was sidelined based on

a sort of crazy theory of Russia collusion and he was he accused himself

from anything overseeing either the Clinton campaign or the Trump

campaign which turns out to be two of the areas where we really could use some leadership

and political accountability

and so I think Jeff Sessions what tremendously naive and it's a disservice to the American

people and to the president they elected that he has sidelined

himself and given authority to someone who's also implicated in both of

these things remember that rod Rosenstein whose role intents and purposes the acting

Attorney General and many of these things was the guy who recommended

firing James Comey he also signed off on one of those FISA

applications this riddled with information that should not have gone before the secret

court that determines whether you can spy on an American citizen we really do have a

problem with the Department of Justice not being

credible right now or seeming to have

political bias and how it handles investigations that have that are politically sensitive and

it would be really good to have some accountability which

we just don't have and they're avoiding responding to Congress as

Congress tries to get information about some of the ways that these investigations were

handled and so it really is a mess and it's a mess in part because

Jeff Sessions recused himself when he really was needed well is a big

sin and maybe a regretful error but it is what it is and it happened a long time ago

you could argue the point if the president was so flummoxed and and

Is Trump's Team Altering Photos To Make His Fingers Look Longer? - Duration: 3:48.

This morning a lot of stories started appearing based on a Gizmodo piece that claim that Donald

Trump's social media team or whoever it is working for him creating these photographs

might actually be editing and doctoring photographs of Donald Trump floating around online to

make his fingers look a little longer and to make the president look a little thinner.

Now immediately when I was bombarded with these headlines, I thought, yeah, that, that

seems right.

I mean, that seems like something this guy would do.

His narcissistic personality has constant talk of, I have big hands and big other things.

Yeah.

This exactly, uh, falls in line with what we would expect from Donald Trump and his

social media team.

The guy is too self centered and narcissistic to a want ugly photos out there of him.

But then I started looking at the photos, you know, the before and the alleged after

photo.

And I'm not going to lie.

I don't really see that much of a difference in any of these.

I think these stories are way overblown.

I mean, you can look at these pictures and yes there are some differences in shading,

but are his fingers longer in one than in the other or is that just the difference in

shading the light playing tricks on us and let me tell you something about that before

you say, well that's what they were doing.

Listen, everybody does that.

If you post photos online, hell, if you post photos on your own instagram, a lot of people

play with shading.

A lot of people change, you know, the way it looks just to make it look a little crisper,

a little clearer.

You know, we have to take photos for advertisements and things like that and we change the shading

to make it look better.

Not to take away, you know, double Chins or wrinkles around the eyes or extend the links

of people's fingers.

I believe this story and how you know what maybe they did right?

I'm not going to say they didn't do it to make him look better.

I'm just saying the evidence that I'm seeing here is not exactly supporting the Plethora

of stories alleging that Donald Trump's social media team is editing his photos.

I hate Trump as much as the next person.

I promise you that.

I mean, but we can't be so overzealous and just trying to make fun of him and trying

to mock him that we ignore what we see with our own eyes.

You know, and I'm sure there's gonna be plenty of people in the comments.

People sending me messages saying you don't see the differences between these two.

Listen, I looked at these photos as long as I could stand it before sitting here in front

of you and maybe it's just me.

Maybe my eyesight is getting worse than it already was, but there is not a whole hell

of a lot of a difference.

You can see differences in lighting may have done something to his double Chin and one

of those photographs I'll give you that.

I think that was a little obvious, but again, that may only be not necessarily to make him

look better, but to make an ad look better because that's where they use a lot of these

photos and you can't necessarily fault them for that.

You're going to find every single politician in this country does that and not because

I don't want to look like that, but because the people making the graphics and making

the ads want them to look as nice as possible and they don't want people focusing on things

like that.

This story to me is overblown and that's why I felt the need to address it today.

There are lots of things to attack about Donald Trump.

There are countless things to attack about Donald Trump.

There are things that happen every single hour to attack this president for, but this

story really ain't one of them.

No One Likes Trump's Latest Shutdown Offer: A Closer Look - Duration: 6:13.

-The president gave a speech on Saturday

about the government shutdown and offered an immigration deal

that both Democrats and hard-line conservatives

have rejected.

For more on this, it's time for "A Closer Look."

[ Cheers and applause ]

President Trump's speech on Saturday

was mostly just a collection of the same debunked talking points

he's been repeating for weeks.

And as usual, he spent the whole time

sucking in air like he was running a marathon.

Here are some highlights.

-[ Breathing heavily ]

[ Laughter ]

-Good Lord!

That sounded like the first 20 minutes

of a movie about Pablo Escobar.

[ Laughter ]

Maybe Trump is laboring

because he knows every time he gives one of these speeches,

it gets harder and harder to convince people.

On Saturday, for example, he floated a new proposal.

In exchange for wall money, he would offer temporary extensions

for recipients of two programs that protect immigrants

known as DACA and TPS.

And not only did Democrats reject it,

but so did hard-line conservatives.

Right-wing pundit Ann Coulter tweeted,

"Trump proposes amnesty. We voted for Trump and got Jeb."

Wow.

She compared him to Jeb Bush, his nemesis from the primaries.

Trump prides himself on being a master negotiator.

Here is actual footage

of Jeb Bush's most successful negotiation.

-Please clap.

[ Laughter ]

-But, of course, the guy's --

The comparison is unfair. It's ridiculous.

I mean, it's not like Trump has ever asked a crowd

to give him a standing ovation.

[ Cheers and applause ]

-Get up.

-Oh, my God.

It's happening! He's turning into Jeb.

Soon he's going to start wearing glasses

and getting trapped in his own hoodie.

[ Laughter ]

Even Trump's speeches are low-energy now.

When he runs for re-election in 2020,

the primary debates are just going to be a split screen

of him making faces at himself.

-That is our plan.

Border security, DACA, TPS, and many other things.

-Now, we are living in a very surreal time

where people like Ann Coulter

have tremendous sway over the president.

In December, Trump was going to give up on the wall

until Coulter called him a gutless

and a vulgar publicity hound.

He then went to try to win her back.

Trump shut down the government.

And once again, after Coulter insulted him

and called the deal amnesty,

Trump scrambled to make her happy by tweeting,

"No, amnesty is not a part of my offer."

Man, why is he so subservient to her?

Does she have a different pee tape?

[ Laughter ]

Here's the thing. Trump's proposal is not amnesty.

It's not even a reasonable deal.

And there's no reason to believe he'll follow through on it.

Remember, we've been down this road many times with him.

And every time, he's reneged on his promises.

As early as February 2017,

he said he wanted to protect DREAMers,

the young undocumented immigrants

brought here as children,

and that he would be open to a bill

that would give them permanent legal status.

-On the DACA program for immigration, what is your plan?

Do you plan to continue that program or to end it?

-We're going to show great heart.

DACA is a very, very difficult subject for me, I will tell you.

To me, it's one of the most difficult subjects I have,

because you have these incredible kids.

We are going to deal with DACA with heart.

The DACA situation is a very, very --

It's a very difficult thing for me.

Because, you know, I love these kids.

I love kids.

I have kids.

-"I have kids!

I have kids.

I've only ever tried to deport two of them.

[ Laughter ]

Sorry, boys. Back to Transylvania."

[ Laughter ]

That was in February 2017.

In September, Trump canceled the program.

Then in January,

he told lawmakers he was open to a compromise.

And then two days after that,

he completely changed his mind again.

And even Republican senator Lindsey Graham,

who brokered the compromise

and has become one of Trump's closest allies in Congress,

was stunned by Trump's sudden change of heart.

-Tuesday we had a president that I was proud to golf with,

call my friend,

who understood immigration had to be bipartisan.

You had to have border security. It's essential.

You have border security with the wall,

but he also understood the idea

that we had to do it with compassion.

Now, I don't know where that guy went.

I want him back.

-Oh! Why did he suddenly change his mind out of nowhere?

Because he's President Werewolf!

Except he's a werewolf 29 days a month

and then there's a full moon,

he turns into a human, and you can talk to him.

And then all you dummies celebrate

because you think it's permanent.

Then the full moon goes away,

and he goes back to chasing you through the woods.

[ Laughter ]

You can't negotiate with someone who doesn't know anything,

who changes his mind constantly,

and who lives in fear of Ann Coulter's Twitter account.

There's really only one person

who can end this shutdown right now,

and that's Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell.

The Senate has already passed a bill to keep the government open

with no strings attached.

All McConnell has to do is pass that same bill again

and override the president's veto,

and the government would open up immediately,

which is why a group of freshmen Democrats,

led by Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez,

showed up in his office last week

demanding to know what he was doing.

-We have voted repeatedly, over and over again,

to reopen the government.

We went to his office in the Capitol.

We went to his office here in the Russell Building.

We went to the floor. -To the cloakroom.

-We went to the cloakroom. He's not in the cloakroom.

He's not in the Capitol.

He's not in the Russell Building.

He's not in the floor of the Senate,

and 800,000 people don't have their paychecks.

So where's Mitch?

-I mean -- Yeah.

[ Cheers and applause ]

Although I will say, if you're ever wondering where's Mitch,

just go down to the marsh and check the lily pads.

[ Laughter ]

We've been down this road with Trump before.

And there's no reason to trust him

any more than we have in the past.

The Senate could pass a bill right now

to reopen the government.

In the meantime, millions of people are needlessly suffering,

and all the president has to say to them is...

-[ Breathing heavily ]

-This has been "A Closer Look."

[ Cheers and applause ]
