Trump slams bombshell report that claimed he told Cohen to LIE to Congress

The office of Special Counsel Robert Mueller has called the bombshell BuzzFeed report claiming President Donald Trump told his former lawyer Michael Cohen to lie to Congress false, and Trump has also fired back.

'Remember it was Buzzfeed that released the totally discredited "Dossier," paid for by Crooked Hillary Clinton and the Democrats (as opposition research), on which the entire Russian probe is based!' he posted late Friday night.

'A very sad day for journalism, but a great day for our Country!'. He then followed that up by tweeting: 'Fake News is truly the ENEMY OF THE PEOPLE!'.

The President's response comes after the special counsel's office issued a rare public statement disputing the accuracy of the news report saying that Trump told his personal attorney Cohen to lie to Congress.

The special counsel's spokesman Peter Carr says: 'BuzzFeed's description of specific statements to the Special Counsel's Office, and characterization of documents and testimony obtained by this office, regarding Michael Cohen's Congressional testimony are not accurate'.

Meanwhile Ben Smith, editor-in-chief at BuzzFeed, tweeted: 'In response to the statement tonight from the Special Counsel's spokesman: We stand by our reporting and the sources who informed it, and we urge the Special Counsel to make clear what he's disputing.

Making his way around to CNN's Anderson Cooper, Smith further requested clarification from the special counsel's office and defended his reporters, Jason Leopold and Anthony Cormier.

'We're really confident in these specific sources and in the stories these reporters told,' Smith said after referencing two unidentified law enforcement officials from the original story that reported Trump directed Cohen to lie to Congress about the Moscow real estate project.

Smith also called into MSNBC to speak with Chris Hayes saying 'the special counsel issued this very vague statement, we are eager to know what he's talking about'. The statement by Robert Mueller's office on Friday night doesn't cite any specific errors.

Trump had earlier Friday evening spent several hours retweeting several supporters. Shortly after the statement from Mueller's office was released Trump retweeted: 'Sadly so many will never get the memo that it was fake!'.

Buzzfeed's bombshell report claimed the president directed Cohen to lie in his testimony to Congress about a Trump Organization tower deal in Moscow that continued through the summer of 2016.

The president also retweeted the Newsmax host John Cardillo saying: 'I told you all that the BuzzFeed story was nonsense. Then he also drew attention to podcaster Dan Bongino's commentary, 'We called it. FAKE NEWS! "More Buzzfeed B.S."'.

He goes on to retweet Sebastian Gorka posting a photo of Trump's inauguration, and podcaster Bongino asserting Trump's job approval among Latinos is up during the government shutdown.

Earlier, New Yorker reporter Ronan Farrow had tweeted his own misgivings about the BuzzFeed story, writing: 'I can't speak to Buzzfeed's sourcing, but, for what it's worth, I declined to run with parts of the narrative they conveyed based on a source central to the story repeatedly disputing the idea that Trump directly issued orders of that kind.

CNN also written previously that the former Los Angeles Times, Dow Jones, and Vice News reporter Leopold had a 'checkered past' when it came to accuracy of his reports during the George W. Bush administration, prior to the Mueller office statement.

Leopold's investigative partner, Anthony Cormier, however, was a member of a Pulitzer Prize-winning team in 2016 at the Tampa Bay Times prior to joining BuzzFeed. He collaborated on an investigative series into the neglected mental health system in Florida.

He joined BuzzFeed's investigative unit shortly afterwards. The president's son, Donald Trump Jr.

, meanwhile, has been gleefully firing off tweets about the news outlet retweeting the Mueller office rebuttal with nothing but a series of 'crying laughing' emojis, and retweeting another post that had made the statement that either Trump is finished or BuzzFeed is with the comment 'You were saying??'.

Since the statement put out by Mueller's office, the President's eldest son Donald Trump Jr has been tweeting and retweeting rapidly taking shots at BuzzFeed and other media outlets reporting around the story including The Daily Beast and CNN.

Buzzfeed's report, if true, would constitute subornation of perjury – a felony crime. Obstruction of justice was the first order of impeachment against President Richard Nixon.

Trump blasted his former lawyer and fixer Cohen on Friday as a liar who was 'trying to reduce his jail time' when he reportedly told Mueller that a scheme to build a Trump Tower project in Moscow extended through the 2016 Republican National Convention and into the months before Trump became president-elect.

Earlier Friday Cohen returned to his Manhattan apartment Friday after getting medical treatment – with his arm appearing to be in a sling. Cohen advisor Lanny Davis said Cohen had gone into the hospital for pre-scheduled shoulder surgery.

Cohen could be seen with his left arm covered, hanging in a sling. He was holding a full-size white pillow against his body. His right hand had a small bandage of the kind used to cover a small wound by an IV.

He also wore a red identification bracelet of the kind distributed by hospitals.

Kim and Trump to meet for a second summit near end of Feb. - Duration: 2:30.

Our top story this evening.

A second summit between North Korea and the United States will take place in February.

Following negotiations between Pyeongyang and Washington, the White House officially

announced on Friday... that North Korean leader Kim Jong-un and U.S. president Donald Trump

will meet for the second time late next month.

The location however, has yet to be announced.

Park Hee-jun reports.

North Korean leader Kim Jong-un and U.S. President Donald Trump,... will meet "near the end of

February," according to the White House on Friday.

But the venue has not been announced,... and is set to be revealed later.

The news came after a 90-minute meeting between the North's top negotiator Kim Yong-chol and

President Trump at the White House.

He earlier met Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and U.S. Special Representative for North

Korea, Stephen Biegun.

They discussed efforts to implement the promises made during the two countries' first bilateral

summit in Singapore.

White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders described the meeting as "productive," but

added that sanctions will remain in place until North Korea's FFVD.

"The United States is going to continue to keep pressure and sanctions on North Korea

until we see fully and verifiable denuclearization.

We've had very good steps in good faith from the North Koreans in releasing the hostages

and other moves and so we're going to continue those conversations.

The President looks forward to next his next meeting."

The spotlight is now on the follow-up negotiations.

North Korea's Vice Foreign Minister Choe Son-hui and Stephen Biegun are expected to meet this

weekend in Stockholm,... for the first time since Biegun took his post in August.

With Pyeongyang and Washington having made the summit official,... the logistics for

the meeting is likely to be sorted out by Choe and Biegun.

According to Seoul's foreign ministry,...

South Korea's nuclear envoy Lee Do-hoon is also in the Swedish capital.

Two-way or three-way discussions could get underway,... which are likely to focus on

the agendas for the upcoming summit.

The latest announcement breaks the months-long deadlock between North Korea and the United

States.

But there's an unfamiliar silence-- no contact with the press nor tweets by Trump.

He's been quiet about the letters he received from Kim,... and regarding any recent developments

concerning North Korea.

The extra discretion could mean there's still a long way ahead... before the two sides can

find a compromise on the North's denuclearization.

It's also being viewed as a power play to maintain Washington's upperhand in the February

summit.

Theresa May's Brexit Deal Defeat, Netflix's Price Surge & Trump's Fast-Food Feast | The Daily Show - Duration: 4:17.

Great Britain.

Not so great anymore.

If you think things look bad in the new Spider-Man trailer,

just wait till you see it on the news.

Breaking news on Brexit.

British Prime Minister Theresa May losing a historic vote

on her plan to leave the European Union,

the Parliament overwhelmingly rejecting the deal

in a vote late tonight in London.

Today's defeat was a landslide.

Theresa May got a shellacking.

The right voted no.

The left voted no.

It was the worst failure of government in Britain

by the numbers in the history of Great Britain.

Good Lord. What a mess.

I bet Mary Poppins floated down, looked around,

and just turned around, like,

"Well, you've really shit the bed now.

I'm out, bitches!"

So, with this vote,

Theresa May has become one of the UK's least popular people,

which is impressive in a country that also has Piers Morgan.

Right? She wanted Brexit.

No one's voted with her.

And now that her Brexit plan has been voted down,

the country is faced with either calling the whole thing off

or going through with Brexit with no exit plan at all.

Yeah. It's basically like the whole UK suddenly realized

they don't have a condom, and they're like,

"Well, we know what the smart thing is to do,

but we also really wanted to get screwed, so..."

Moving on, Netflix--

they're the streaming service that turned

every Blockbuster Video into a seasonal Halloween store,

and, uh, they just made a big announcement.

Big news today out of Netflix,

raising prices for U.S. subs as much as 18%,

effective immediately for new users.

It's the company's biggest increase

since it launched its streaming service 12 years ago.

The price for Netflix's most popular plan will jump the most,

to $13 per month from $11.

That's right, Netflix is increasing its prices,

which, I'm sorry, is so unfair.

Do they even care about how this is gonna affect me

and my mom and Kibuuka and Xolisa

and all the other people using my account?

No, they don't care. They don't care.

I mean, before, I could divide $11

by the 11 people who have my password.

But $13? That shit makes no sense!

Now I'm gonna have to give two more people my log-in details.

So if anyone wants to join my account,

it's tnoah, and then the password is...

(speaks foreign language) Okay? Yeah.

Obviously, all caps.

-Go crazy. -(applause)

But, look, I-I will admit, I do get why Netflix is doing this.

Right? Netflix just spent $100 million to buy Friends.

Yeah. That's a lot of money.

That's almost as much as Don Jr. spent to buy his friends.

Oh, and, speaking of the Trumps,

it is now day 25 of the government shutdown,

the longest in American history.

And it looks like now even President Trump

is starting to feel the effects.

REPORTER: An odd feast for champions.

The Clemson Tigers football team

was treated to a vast spread of...

fast food during their visit to the White House.

Much of the White House resident staff is not working

because of the shutdown.

So, President Trump, he footed the bill

and treated the NCAA champs

to burgers, fries, and pizza.

Burger King, Wendy's, and McDonald's.

We have Big Macs. We have Quarter Pounders with Cheese.

We have everything that I like, that you like.

MAN: What's your favorite thing here, Mr. President?

Do you pref...

I like how-- I like how he busted himself.

'Cause, like, "We got all the things that I like--

that you like, that you like, that you like."

And, honestly, is there anything more Trump

than eating McDonald's by candlelight?

Like, I feel like that's him.

If you combine any fancy thing with any garbage-y thing,

that's Trump's style, right?

McDonald's by candlelight.

Caviar in a Porta-Potty.

Him in the White House.

-You know? -(cheering and applause)

It's just a mix.

But I will say this:

if the government shutdown means

that Trump gets to eat cheeseburgers every night,

then this thing is gonna last forever.

Buckle up, folks.

Pentagon Officials Freaked Out That Trump Admin Wants To Attack Iran - Duration: 3:33.

Earlier this week, it was reported that John Bolton, Donald Trump's national security advisor,

had repeatedly been pressing the Pentagon to come up with plans that he could present

to the president, uh, so they could figure out how best to go and attack Iran.

Well, yesterday, CNN reported after talking to sources inside the Department of Defense

that the Pentagon, dod officials are actually starting to get unnerved about the fact that

John Bolton and the National Security Council and the Trump admin itself, uh, that they

seem hellbent on wanting to attack Iran.

The Pentagon officials, you know, these guys, they love a good war, but even they are willing

to say we don't really have a reason to go over and attack Iran.

There's really not anything there that would warrant us putting boots on the ground or

planes in the air or dropping bombs on them.

So we're not exactly sure why they want this so badly.

Nonetheless, the Pentagon has put forward plans, uh, on various different ways to attack

the country if the administration feels the need to do that.

However, it is not clear at this point whether or not they have actually turned those over

to John Bolton.

I do not believe based on the evidence we've seen that they have turned those over to Bolton

because if they had, we would currently be bombing the hell out of the country because

that's what John Bolton is.

That's what all of us thought would happen.

As soon as John Bolton became the national security advisor and we found out this week

that yes, that is exactly what he is attempting to do, but here's another possible scenario

here at CNN.

Didn't mention this.

We could be looking at a potential wag the dog situation where Donald Trump sees the

walls closing in around him.

He sees the public turning on him.

His poll numbers are getting worse and worse by the week, but what better way to bolster

support for a sitting president then to launch a war?

It's what happens.

Unfortunately, whenever a war breaks out, whenever we have to go over and bomb another

country, it creates unease with the American public and they're looking for somebody to

comfort them and tell them that everything is going to be okay and that is typically

what a president does.

It's what George W dot Bush does.

George W. Bush would not have won reelection had he not started wars in the Middle East.

I mean even before the nine slash 11 attacks, his approval rating was in the toilet and

then shot way up after that happened because he emerged as the guy that's going to heal

the country, you know, come put your head on my shoulder where everything's going to

be fine.

I'm going to take care of you.

Trust me.

And people did unfortunately.

And then he went ahead and lied about the intelligence and attacked Iraq.

And because of that, people got scared.

They thought that Saddam Hussein was somehow the big bad guy that we needed to take out

and they voted for him again in 2004.

Trump's hoping the same situation can save him here except the differences.

At least George W. Bush had the Pentagon and other intelligence agencies willing to phony

up data to paint Saddam Hussein as some kind of global threat.

And now the Pentagon, at least at the moment on this one particular issue, has enough good

sense to say we don't have any reason whatsoever to go over there and attack Iran.

Trump Told Michael Cohen To LIE During Congressional Testimony - Duration: 5:02.

So obviously the biggest news in the country right now, the story that everybody is talking

about is the Buzzfeed story, saying that Michael Cohen was instructed to lie to Congress about

the Trump tower Moscow project at the request of Donald Trump himself.

Now obviously if this story is accurate, this is a huge deal and not necessarily just because,

oh, it's Trump tower Moscow, right?

The real issue here is that if Donald Trump did order Michael Cohen to lie to Congress,

then that's actually three separate felonies all rolled into one.

So that in itself is a big deal.

But here's the thing, let's go into some of the specifics here.

According to text messages, company emails and other various documents that have been

obtained by the Special Prosecutor, Robert Mueller's office, they have enough evidence.

Oh, including multiple witnesses from the Trump organization who have all corroborated

the story separately.

Uh, Michael Cohen was told by Donald Trump to go to congress shortly after the election

and lie to them about when the talks for the Trump tower, Moscow project actually ended.

As we know now, the talks for Trump tower Moscow actually continued well beyond the

presidential campaign, but Trump told Cohen to tell them that it ended long before the

campaign, and if you recall a few months ago, uh, when Robert Mueller said, hey, Michael

Cohen lied to Congress, this is what that lie was.

That's what he knows.

Now, Michael Cohen is also coming forward.

He's going to be testifying in front of Congress, uh, the house on February seventh.

So in just a few weeks we're going to hear from him himself whether or not this story

is accurate.

And of course that also depends on whether or not we can believe Michael Cohen.

After all, he did lie to Congress.

Once that Donald Trump's request, he may be willing to lie to Congress again to save his

own butt.

But at this point, Michael Cohen's got nothing to fear.

I mean, he knows he's got his prison sentence.

He knows he's going away and there's nothing he can do to fix that is also nothing else

that he can do at the moment that would increase his prison sentence.

His fate is sealed.

All he has left to do is to flip on the president and roll over and give them every piece of

information that they need to impeach him, which honestly at this point I believe is

exactly what's going to happen.

In fact, we might see the wheels of impeachment begin moving shortly after Michael Cohen's

February seventh testimony if he corroborates this particular buzzfeed story, but here's

the thing, impeachment does not mean removal from office.

The Senate does not even come close to having enough people willing to remove the president

from office in order for that to happen, but the house could impeach him.

The house could vote on articles of impeachment past them, and therefore the president at

that point, much like Bill Clinton was in the nineties, is impeached, just not removed

from office.

What would happen in that particular situation then?

If the Senate doesn't vote to remove or convict, Trump just stays in office as an impeached

president.

How's that gonna play out in 2020?

You know, how are Republicans going to feel about having a nominee who was impeached for

obstruction of justice, perjury, witness tampering, a bedding perjury?

All kinds of things that just emerged from this one particular story that would be a

scandal plagued nominee who would be ripe for a primary challenger to come in and get

him off the ticket or Republicans in the Senate could, and this is the longest shot that I

don't think has a chance of happening, could determine that Trump is far too toxic to have

at the top of a 2020 tickets and so maybe you wouldn't get enough, you know, 15 I think

maybe to flip a and vote to convict and removed from office, and then you end up with president

pence who may not have the same baggage as Trump will wait until the final molar report

comes out.

To be able to make that determination.

Pence is also not a fighter like Trump, which attracted a lot of the fragile, a masculine

people in this country and so he doesn't stand a very good chance of even being able to win

an election on his own.

Bottom line is this.

This is bad for Trump, but it doesn't mean that one that collusion did happen, or two,

that he's going to be removed from office, but what it means is that his fight to stay

in office in 2020 just became nearly impossible.
