Trump news on Youtube Dec 25 2018

Are you still a believer in Trump? Because at any age it's marginal, right? — napacab (@napacab) December 25, 2018 "Et tu crois encore à Donald Trump? Parce qu'à n'importe quel âge, c'est rare, hein!" ARE YOU STILL A BELIEVER IN SANTA? BECAUSE AT SEVEN IT'S MARGINAL, RIGHT?!? pic

twitter.com/SOwZZpV3Pv — Logan Hall (@loganclarkhall) December 25, 2018 "Et voilà le petit garçon de sept ans après que Trump lui a demandé s'il croyait encore au Père Noël

" So, I did this once to an eight-year-old, expressing disbelief that he still believed in Santa

The difference is, I was six. https://t.co/O0ZhQXnu2a — Josh Barro (@jbarro) December 25, 2018 "Bon

J'avoue: je l'ai fait une fois à un enfant de huit ans, de lui exprimer mon doute quant au fait qu'il croit encore au Père Noël

La seule différence, c'est que j'avais six ans." À voir également sur Le HuffPost:

for the Democrats to come back and make a deal and desperately needed border

security Trump wrote on Twitter the president spent most of the morning on

the social media platform urging Democrats to pass a funding bill for

national security after the government shutdown on Friday the House of

Representatives passed a continuing resolution to keep the government open

with five billion dollars in funding for border security but the Senate refused

HUGE ANNOUNCEMENT ROCKS DC TRUMP EXPOSES MASSIVE MUELLER COVERUP - Duration: 11:51.

HUGE ANNOUNCEMENT ROCKS DC TRUMP EXPOSES MASSIVE MUELLER COVERUP

Robert Mueller is about to make his move.

The special counsel has been digging around for something to use against the President.

And reports are surfacing he is about to blindside Trump with this bombshell indictment.

Mueller has been building a case that the Russians were behind the hacks of the DNC

and Clinton campaign chairman John Podesta's email.

No evidence has been made public that would back up those claims.

In fact, the Nation magazine published a report by NSA experts who determined the hack was

an inside job.

But Mueller is determined to prove it was the Russians – because if it wasn't the

Russians, that means there was no collusion – and is set to indict Russians hackers

and possibly their paymasters.

NBC reports:

"SPECIAL COUNSEL ROBERT MUELLER IS ASSEMBLING A CASE FOR CRIMINAL CHARGES AGAINST RUSSIANS

WHO CARRIED OUT THE HACKING AND LEAKING OF PRIVATE INFORMATION DESIGNED TO HURT DEMOCRATS

IN THE 2016 ELECTION, MULTIPLE CURRENT AND FORMER GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS FAMILIAR WITH

THE MATTER TELL NBC NEWS.

MUCH LIKE THE INDICTMENT MUELLER FILED LAST MONTH CHARGING A DIFFERENT GROUP OF RUSSIANS

IN A SOCIAL MEDIA TROLLING AND ILLEGAL-AD-BUYING SCHEME, THE POSSIBLE NEW CHARGES ARE EXPECTED

TO RELY HEAVILY ON SECRET INTELLIGENCE GATHERED BY THE CIA, THE FBI, THE NATIONAL SECURITY

AGENCY (NSA) AND THE DEPARTMENT OF HOMELAND SECURITY (DHS), SEVERAL OF THE OFFICIALS SAY.

MUELLER'S CONSIDERATION OF CHARGES ACCUSING RUSSIANS IN THE HACKING CASE HAS NOT BEEN

REPORTED PREVIOUSLY.

SOURCES SAY HE HAS LONG HAD SUFFICIENT EVIDENCE TO MAKE A CASE, BUT STRATEGIC ISSUES COULD

DICTATE THE TIMING.

POTENTIAL CHARGES INCLUDE VIOLATIONS OF STATUTES ON CONSPIRACY, ELECTION LAW AS WELL AS THE

COMPUTER FRAUD AND ABUSE ACT.

ONE U.S. OFFICIAL BRIEFED ON THE MATTER SAID THE CHARGES ARE NOT IMMINENT, BUT OTHER KNOWLEDGEABLE

SOURCES SAID THEY ARE EXPECTED IN THE NEXT FEW WEEKS OR MONTHS.

IT'S ALSO POSSIBLE MUELLER COULD OPT NOT TO MOVE FORWARD BECAUSE OF CONCERNS ABOUT

EXPOSING INTELLIGENCE OR OTHER REASONS — OR THAT HE FILES THE INDICTMENT UNDER SEAL, SO

THE PUBLIC DOESN'T SEE IT INITIALLY.

THE SOURCES SAY THE POSSIBLE NEW INDICTMENT — OR MORE THAN ONE, IF THAT'S HOW MUELLER'S

OFFICE DECIDES TO PROCEED — WOULD DELVE INTO THE DETAILS OF, AND THE PEOPLE BEHIND,

THE RUSSIAN INTELLIGENCE OPERATION THAT USED HACKERS TO PENETRATE COMPUTER NETWORKS AND

STEAL EMAILS OF BOTH THE DEMOCRATIC NATIONAL COMMITTEE (DNC) AND CLINTON CAMPAIGN CHAIRMAN

JOHN PODESTA.

THE RELEASE OF EMBARRASSING DEMOCRATIC EMAILS THROUGH WIKILEAKS BECAME A PROMINENT FEATURE

IN THE 2016 PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION, CITED AT LEAST 145 TIMES BY REPUBLICAN CANDIDATE DONALD

TRUMP IN THE FINAL MONTH OF THE CAMPAIGN.

AT ONE POINT HE PUBLICLY URGED "RUSSIA" TO FIND AND RELEASE EMAILS TRUMP BELIEVED

WERE MISSING FROM DEMOCRAT HILLARY CLINTON'S PRIVATE SERVER."

Mueller has been asking witnesses if Trump knew about the hacked emails and if he coordinated

in their strategic release.

NBC also reports he may name some Americans as unindicted co-conspirators to pressure

them to cooperate.

But since Mueller is indicting Russians, there is no chance there will ever be a trial.

So he will never have to make his evidence public.

This looks like another scheme to ratchet up the pressure on witnesses to turn over

anything they know on Trump so Mueller can twist it into something he can use to recommend

Congress impeach the President.

We will keep you up to date on any new developments

in this story.

Trump's 'poor me' Christmas Eve tweet draws mockery as 800,000 federal workers go without pay - Duration: 11:10.

Marooned in the White House on a gray Christmas Eve, unable to fly off to his beach resort in Florida to play golf, President Trump unleashed a morose tweet Monday bemoaning his fate in the world's most famous gilded prison

"I am all alone (poor me) in the White House waiting for the Democrats to come back and make a deal on desperately needed Border Security," he began

Advertisement >  It was the tweet that launched a thousand memes — including a rapidly unearthed cameo by Trump in the 1992 film "Home Alone 2," in which the real estate mogul briefly encounters Macaulay Culkin's character, Kevin McCallister, at the Plaza Hotel in New York City

Other online responses traded on Charles Dickens' "A Christmas Carol," especially when the uncaring miser Ebenezer Scrooge is shown the error of his ways

More than a few commentators suggested that if Trump were feeling lonely, he could visit U

S. troops in a war zone, a trip he has yet to make.  The president won't be alone on Christmas Day

The first lady flew back to Washington from Mar-a-Lago, the Florida beachfront resort where Trump had planned to spend a 16-day holiday

In the meantime, in a dozen tweets, he praised the autocratic regime in Saudi Arabia, lashed out at his outgoing Pentagon chief, said he hoped to meet North Korea's dictator again, slammed the Federal Reserve as "the only problem" in the U

S. economy and blamed Democrats for the partial government shutdown that he last week said he would be "proud" to cause

On Friday, Trump had rejected a bipartisan stopgap funding bill to keep the government open

That forced a shutdown early Saturday, paralyzing about a fourth of the federal government and forcing about 800,000 federal workers to go without pay over the holidays

It is the third partial shutdown of 2018.  At issue is Trump's demand for a $5-billion down payment to extend existing walls and fences along the border with Mexico and Democrats' refusal to pay more than $1

3 billion for a mix of border security measures.  No resolution in the impasse is likely before Thursday at the earliest, and possibly not before the new year next week

Negotiations appeared at a standstill, and congressional leaders left Washington for the holiday

Some effects were small but symbolic, including the darkening of the National Christmas Tree over the weekend

It was lit on Christmas Eve, however.  Trump renounced any notion of culpability for the shutdown, summoning his Homeland Security secretary, Kirstjen Nielsen, for a meeting Monday on border security

"Virtually every Democrat we are dealing with today strongly supported a Border Wall or Fence," he tweeted beforehand

"It was only when I made it an important part of my campaign…that they turned against it

"  Democratic leaders blamed Trump, saying negotiations have been impossible because it's never clear where the president stands

"It's Christmas Eve and @realDonaldTrump is plunging the country into chaos," Rep

Nancy Pelosi (D-San Francisco), who will become House Speaker next week due to Democratic gains in the November midterm election, said in a joint statement with Sen

Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.), the Senate minority leader.  "Instead of bringing certainty into people's lives, he's continuing the Trump Shutdown just to please right-wing radio and TV hosts," they said

"The president wanted the shutdown, but he seems not to know how to get himself out of it

"  Trump's tweets included a photo of him peering at a piece of paper at his Oval Office desk while two aides — and a portrait of President Lincoln — look on

Advertisement >  "Christmas Eve briefing with my team working on North Korea – Progress being made

Looking forward to my next summit with Chairman Kim!" he wrote of the photo.  By all accounts, the nuclear talks with North Korea have broken down

Despite Trump's claims after he met leader Kim Jong Un in Singapore last June that Pyongyang had committed to give up its nuclear weapons, the country's official news media said Thursday that it would do so only if the United States "completely eliminated" its own nuclear threat

Trump's blizzard of Christmas Eve tweets ranged from self-congratulatory to self-pitying in a now-familiar dynamic for a president who tends to claim either victory — or victimhood

In some, he tried to reassure his supporters — and perhaps himself — to ignore the waves of criticism that followed his abrupt decision to withdraw all U

S. troops from Syria, blindsiding allies and lawmakers and persuading his secretary of Defense to quit in protest

"AMERICA IS RESPECTED AGAIN!" he tweeted.  A nosedive in the stock market — it fell an additional 653 points on a shortened trading day Monday for its worst Christmas Eve ever — has been a particular sore point for Trump, who long claimed credit for the 10-year bull market that crested in October

Apparently thinking of the golf he isn't playing, Trump tweeted that the Fed — the nation's complex central banking system, created to control monetary policy — "is like a powerful golfer who can't score because he has no touch — he can't putt!"  The president's attacks are seen as a threat to the Fed's traditional independence in assessing economic data and setting interest rates

He has personally castigated the Fed chairman, Jerome H. Powell, over the decision to raise its key short-term rate four times this year

Trump apparently also was still smarting from Defense Secretary James N. Mattis' scathing resignation letter last week

The retired four-star Marine general all but accused the president of endangering U

S. security by undermining military alliances and abandoning allies.  On Saturday, Trump dispatched his secretary of State, Michael R

Pompeo, to tell Mattis that he couldn't quit on Feb. 28, as he planned, because he's being fired Jan

1.  Mattis had offered to stay two more months to provide a "smooth transition" to a successor and to attend a NATO defense ministers' meeting in Europe, where Trump is widely distrusted

After several prominent lawmakers endorsed Mattis' call for bolstering military alliances like NATO, Trump complained Monday about "those few Senators who think I don't like or appreciate being allied with other countries

"  "They are wrong, I DO," he tweeted. "What I don't like, however, is when many of these same countries take advantage of their friendship with the United States" in military affairs and trade

"General Mattis did not see this as a problem. I DO, and it is being fixed!" he added

Melania flies back from Mar-a-Lago after Trump says he's 'all alone' - Daily News - Duration: 3:04.

Melania Trump boarded a plane in Palm Beach on Monday afternoon to return to Washington D

C. for Christmas as President Donald Trump complained on Twitter he was 'all alone (poor me) in the White House

'. The first couple's son, 12-year-old Barron, was not spotted. She boarded a C37A government plane - an adapted Gulfstream V - for the approximately two and half hour flight to the nation's Capitol

, including complaining he is alone in the White House.'I am all alone (poor me) in the White House waiting for the Democrats to come back and make a deal on desperately needed Border Security,' he wrote

Melania Trump was spotted boarding the plane at 12:55 p.m., 23 minutes after Trump's tweet

Share this article Share This evening, she and the president will make phone calls into the NORAD Santa Tracker at 6:30 p

m., CBS News reported. The North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) has been tracking Santa's flight across the globe for 63 years

NORAD is funded by the Pentagon. Military spending for fiscal year 2019 was approved earlier this year, meaning service people are not affected by the government shut down

The first couple made similar calls last year from Mar-a-Lago.  The Trumps were originally scheduled to spend 16 days at Mar-a-Lago, the Southern White House, over the holidays

But plans changed when the government shut down on Friday at midnight after Democrats and Trump could not come to an agreement on funding his border wall

Trump wants his wall fully funded at $5 billion while Democrats offered $1.3 billion

Negotiations are stalled and not expected to resume until Thursday. Most lawmakers have left town for the holidays

The White House announced over the weekend President Trump would stay at the White House and the first lady, who was already in Florida that point, would return to spend the holidays with him

'Due to the shutdown, President Trump will remain in Washington, D.C. and the First Lady will return from Florida so they can spend Christmas together,' White House press secretary Sarah Sanders said in a statement on Saturday

Trump Says His Base Will Revolt If He Gets Impeached - Duration: 4:05.

On Tuesday of this week, Donald Trump gave an interview to Reuters where they were asking

him about the possibility of impeachment after all the president has been implicated in felony

activity by his former lawyer slash fixer Michael Cohen.

He is very clearly the individual one listed in those court filings.

So Reuters was asking, Hey, what, what's up with this?

And Donald Trump said, the following in response said, it's hard to impeach somebody who hasn't

done anything wrong and who's created the greatest economy in the history of our country.

Um, I'm not concerned.

No, I think that the people would revolt if that happened.

So is Donald Trump right now telling us that his craze supporters are going to revolt,

maybe try to overthrow the government if this man is impeached.

And, and before we actually even dive into that a little bit, let's talk about the fact

that it doesn't matter how good the economy is, which it's really not as good as you say.

It is.

Certainly not the best we've ever had, not even close to it, idiot.

Um, that wouldn't weigh on your impeachment.

You Moron.

You can't go out there and do all these illegal things and then say, yeah, but we created

150,000 jobs last month, so let's call it even right that, that's not how it works.

That is not how this works.

You are so painfully stupid.

Your stupidity causes me pain because I can't even dumb down my own brain enough to process

how stupid you truly are, but this is less about stupidity, uh, stupidity and more about

how frightened you are because that's what's happening here.

And to address your second point, the bigger point about the revolt that'll take place.

If you get impeached, let me tell you what's going to happen with these so called a revolt

that you're predicting right now.

You're starting to lose a little bit of support from some of your most hardcore supporters.

Not many, but some.

The reports are out there, they've done interviews.

A couple people maybe have flipped just like all your buddies flipped on Youtube, but a

lot of your support is coming from insecure people.

People who desperately need a hero because they themselves feel weak.

Psychologists have analyzed this.

They've looked at all of the available data and this is the conclusion that they've come

to, so in terms of a revolt, if you get impeached your base based on the analysis of mental

health professionals do not have the courage to go out there and actually do something

and that's actually not even an attack on them.

That is typically what happens in situations like this.

Just like all the Democrats who did not move to Canada when you won the election, there's

always talk of a grand scheme, a grand, we're going to do this.

We're not going to take it.

We're going to make sure we stand up and do it, and then it never actually comes to fruition.

That's what happens.

So you can piss and Moan and say, I didn't do anything wrong.

The economy's good, my base will revolt.

None of those are going to save you from impeachment because yeah, you have done things wrong.

You're implicated in felony activity.

No matter how you spin it, no matter how you try to say no.

That was a private transaction.

You basically admitted to it.

At this point.

Now I don't see impeachment on the immediate horizon.

I don't even know that it will actually happen, but what I do know is that at some point you're

going to have to answer for all the crimes that you have at least been implicated in

and that time may come during the 2020 presidential election.

If enough evidence comes out showing that you have committed crimes, maybe the Democrats

don't even worry with trying to impeach you and instead make your criminal activity the

flashpoint of that campaign, and if they do, then you'll have to deal with the comeuppance

from the American voters and it's going to be up to them to decide whether or not they

want a criminal serving in the White House.

TRUMP ROCKS THE GLOBE WITH MAJOR ANNOUNCEMENT – DEMS FURIOUS! - Duration: 11:49.

TRUMP ROCKS THE GLOBE WITH MAJOR ANNOUNCEMENT – DEMS FURIOUS!

When Donald Trump ran for office, he promised to put Americans first.

That means ALL Americans, at every level.

We all suffer from the tax burden the federal government puts on us.

But a new bill, just passed by the Senate, will help save taxpayers a fortune.

Not only that, but it will help a group of Americans often ignored by our government.

And unbelievably enough, even liberals on CNN are praising it as a "Christmas miracle"!

From Breitbart:

"During a segment on CNN's New Day, Jones praised the Senate's passage of the First

Step Act and President Trump for supporting the legislation…

…comparing it to a 'holiday miracle' that will 'close the revolving door of our

federal prison.'

'Look this is a Christmas miracle,' Jones said.

'You had for the first time in more than a generation, both parties coming together

to do something for people at the bottom.'"

The Congressional Budget Office predicts the reform bill will reduce the number of prisoners

by about 53,000 persons over the 2019-2028 period.

That means a smaller burden on taxpayers, who must front the costs of our bloated prison

system.

The bill doesn't just dump inmates into the streets, either: it's a thoughtful reform

that will help reduce recidivism and improve conditions for prisoners.

But inmates that show signs of reform (i.e.: good behavior) will enjoy reduced sentences

and more contact with their families.

People like Van Jones have to grit their teeth, too, knowing this bill never would've happened

without Donald Trump.

Remember, it was Jared Kushner, Trump's son-in-law and advisor, who championed this

bill for a long time.

He scored Trump's support and made sure Congress is making it happen.

These kinds of reforms did not happen under Obama, did they?

Hillary Clinton never intended on doing it, either.

But Trump just did it … and even Democrats can't find anything wrong

with it!

ROBERT MUELLER GETS BAD NEWS AFTER THREATENING PRESIDENT TRUMP - Duration: 10:02.

ROBERT MUELLER GETS BAD NEWS AFTER THREATENING PRESIDENT TRUMP

Donald just let the cat out of the bag, and it's going to be the end of Mueller.

Some people wonder why Donald Trump hasn't fired Robert Mueller and ended his "Russian

probe."

There are several reasons.

But the biggest is that Trump has nothing to hide.

He did not collude with Russia and expects the probe to prove that beyond a shadow of

a doubt.

Most American will accept that as fact.

Not liberals.

These brain-dead maniacs will forever believe Trump is a Russian agent.

Beyond all fact or reason, they will hold to this lie till their dying breath.

All because the media told them so.

But we've known all along the probe is a witch hunt.

It was started by former FBI James Comey, a corrupt agent out for himself.

Even today he defies the president and openly attacks our country.

We might not have to live with this stupid probe for much longer, though.

New reports have come out proving it was a sham all along.

From Fox News:

President Trump claimed Monday that newly released Foreign Intelligence Surveillance

Act warrant files pertaining to former campaign aide Carter Page show the "Fake Dirty Dossier"

started Special Counsel Robert Mueller's Russia probe.

"So we now find out that it was indeed the unverified and Fake Dirty Dossier, that was

paid for by crooked Hillary Clinton and the DNC, that was knowingly & falsely submitted

to FISA and which was responsible for starting that totally conflicted and discredited Mueller

Witch Hunt!" Trump tweeted early Monday.

The president's tweet comes after a heavily redacted version of the FISA warrant application

to spy on Page was released by the FBI.

The documents pertain to the October 2016 application to the FISA court to wiretap Page,

which led to later renewals.

The application had previously been classified.

Hillary Clinton paid foreign agents—including sources in Russia—to produce a fake dossier

to frame Trump.

This is where the Russia probe lie came from.

Obama's corrupt DOJ used that unverified and obviously fake dossier to acquire a warrant

to spy on Trump's campaign.

The dossier was not factual and could not be verified.

It's not the kind of "evidence" that is used to acquire a warrant to monitor a

potential threat.

The Fourth Amendment protects U.S. citizens from unlawful monitoring by the government.

Obama's DOJ violated that amendment in order to take down Donald Trump.

It was a gross violation of our laws and democracy.

Somebody must be held accountable.

Now that we know the DOJ lied to acquire a FISA warrant—the basis of the Mueller witch

hunt—its high time this charade came to an end.

But it will only happen if the American people get the word out and keep the media from

burying

this bombshell.

Why the Trump administration's response to falling stocks left the markets more jittery - Duration: 7:07.

NICK SCHIFRIN: There was no Christmas Eve gift for investors, shareholders, retirees

or the jittery markets.

Today was the worst trading day ever on a Christmas Eve.

And it comes after the markets finished their worst trading week since the 2008 financial

crisis.

Slower growth, higher interest rates, lower profits, a shutdown and trade wars, there's

plenty to worry investors.

But as William Brangham tells us, the president and his team seem to be adding to that anxiety.

WILLIAM BRANGHAM: Heading into today, several of the major stock indexes were already in

bear market territory for the first time in a decade.

That includes the Nasdaq and the Standard & Poor's 500.

A bear market is when an index drops 20 percent from a recent high.

Then, over the weekend, there were new revelations that further unnerved investors.

President Trump was reportedly considering firing the chairman of the Federal Reserve,

Jay Powell.

Administration officials have since denied the president had any such intention.

But the president again went after the Fed today, tweeting -- quote -- "The only problem

our economy has is the Fed.

They don't have a feel for the market."

On top of that, yesterday, Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin issued this puzzling statement,

saying he'd spoken with the heads of the biggest U.S. banks to reiterate the strength of the

financial system and to confirm their reserves of cash for lending.

To many, this hearkened back to a concern not seen since the Great Recession in 2008.

Annie Lowrey watches all this for "The Atlantic."

And she joins me now from New York.

Annie, thank you for being here.

You wrote a column in "The Atlantic" where you were describing this letter that Mnuchin

put out yesterday, and equated it to going to the doctor when you have the symptoms of

a head cold, your doctor can't stop talking about cancer, and how alarming that is.

I mean, what do you think the secretary was up to?

ANNIE LOWREY, "The Atlantic": Yes.

So it would be quite normal for the treasury secretary to talk to the heads of big banks.

This is something that happens all the time, that isn't surprising.

But the Treasury put out this press release on a weekend, before a holiday, assuring market

participants that nothing was happening, indicating that there was some kind of financial crisis

or liquidity crisis at the big banks, which is not something that anybody was worried

about.

We're in a very kind of classic vanilla bear market, but there's no signs that the nation's

banks are teetering or that we have to have those kind of 2007-2008 worries again.

And so it's a very weird statement.

And it, frankly, like, unnerved a lot of market participants, who are like, does Secretary

Mnuchin see something thing that we don't see, is there something that we're missing?

Because this just seems like a down market.

WILLIAM BRANGHAM: I guess that's just a mystery we will have to wait and find out about.

What is it, do you think, is really going on with the market?

We have seen this very precipitous drop.

What do you think is driving that?

ANNIE LOWREY: There are a number of fundamental issues that the market is responding to.

So, first and perhaps most important, the Fed is raising interest rates.

That's increasing borrowing costs.

It's slowing the economy down.

The markets are pricing that in.

And it's starting to show up in terms of decreasing home sales, decreasing car sales, perhaps

increasing defaults.

We have problems in a number of kind of financial markets.

So the leverage loan market, for instance, is having some issues, where people are losing

some money.

All of this is somewhat to be expected, though, right?

Like, we have been in a bull market for 10 years.

And this is seen as being kind of a natural correction.

People are also concerned about Donald Trump's trade war.

They are concerned about uncertainty emanating from Washington.

They are concerned about slowing global growth.

All of these things are affecting the markets, and they might indicate that the U.S. economy

might slow down.

But, again, that's very different from being in the sort of situation that Mnuchin was

gesturing to, where you might have a kind of financial crisis, and be worried about

the stability and the safety of American financial institutions themselves.

WILLIAM BRANGHAM: The president today, as we saw, was tweeting that the only problem

the economy has is the Federal Reserve and their announcement that they're upping interest

rates.

What do you think is going on there?

Is the president simply trying to find someone to blame for this stock market decline?

ANNIE LOWREY: Absolutely.

The president has, quite unusually, seen a rising market as being a sign of his success.

He points to a rising market as being a good indicator of economic health, which it really

isn't.

And, therefore, he's looking for somebody to blame now that the market is going down.

It's really important to note that the Federal Reserve is not responsible for the market

going up.

It doesn't see the market going up as being its responsibility.

It is responsible for two things, and two things only, price stability and unemployment.

And both of those things are looking pretty good.

So that happening within the context of a healthy financial sector means that the Fed

is going to continue probably raising rates, unless we start to see those signs of the

economy itself slowing down.

WILLIAM BRANGHAM: But does the president or some of his allies who agree with the criticism

of the Fed that there is -- there might be some underlying factors?

I mean, there is a sense that the global economy is slowing down, and that maybe we might see

those ripple effects fairly soon, and that maybe raising interest rates is not the best

idea.

ANNIE LOWREY: Certainly.

And I think that if you started to see the unemployment rate go up, inflation to drop,

growth to slow down, those kind of things would absolutely give the Fed pause.

But the markets going down and Donald Trump's sort of yelling at the Fed is not something

that's really going to change their path.

Right now, I think that the markets concerned about instability emanating from Washington

from the Trump administration itself.

And one thing that happened with Secretary Mnuchin's statement, talking to market participants,

is that they were weirded out by it, and they felt like it was symbolic of the kind of shambolic

state of government, inexperience at the Treasury.

And so that statement alone kind of freaked them out, along with all of the tweets that

Donald Trump has been making, the government shutdown, this general sense of chaos emanating

from Washington.

So I do think that uncertainty is sort of playing into the animal spirits here.

WILLIAM BRANGHAM: I want to touch on something you referenced before.

Then I'm wondering if we are making too much of this stock market decline, because, as

you say, we have had 10 years of a truly incredible market, and now we have had three months of

a bad stock market.

But 10 years vs. three months, that that's an unequal ratio.

ANNIE LOWREY: Absolutely.

Markets go up, they go down.

There's nothing right now to indicate that this is much more than a soft patch.

The economy might slow down.

We might even enter recession.

But right now, this is really just a bear market, a correction in the market.

And we would need more data to indicate that there was sort of a deeper underlying problem

just than stocks kind of selling off and investors losing some money.

WILLIAM BRANGHAM: All right, Annie Lowrey of "The Atlantic," thanks for coming in on

Christmas Eve.

ANNIE LOWREY: Thanks for having me.
