Ahmir times touched off a media debate by reporting that robert muller is
focusing on a new source of information in his investigation of possible
obstruction of justice by the president Donald Trump's tweets which are of
course quite public and read by 53 million followers joining us now from
New York Morgan Ortegas a former Treasury Department official and
co-chair of the Maverick PAC and here in Washington bill press host of the online
bill press show and author of from the left a life in the crossfire Morgan so
this was the lead story in The New York Times Muller scrutinizing Trump's tweets
especially about Jim Comey and Jeff Sessions as part of this obstruction
inquiry this was presented the story is a perfectly plausible prosecutorial
strategy but I'm thinking tweets well I'm certainly not a lawyer Howie but I
would say that you know what I found interesting this week is three major
things happen the GDP was put at four point one percent which is a largest
economic growth since we've seen since the third quarter of 2014 which was
added seven trillion dollars to the economy and new growth and what's
incredibly important to me as a member of the military is the fact that we got
our remains home from North Korea from our men who are lost their decade they
were covered but yet right so I bring that up to say that I think those things
are what's really important to the American people if you're running a
small business like my father is in Florida adding a having GDP growth of 4%
is really important another story about tweets about the president's tweets are
not important to him although I have to say he probably doesn't read the New
York Times well he met with the publisher of the New York Times
according to his own suite bill I'll let you respond to the question of whether
it's an important story or not it certainly got plenty of pickup but also
doesn't it suggests that Robert mola doesn't have all the super-secret
evidence we might have imagined and so he's trying to tie the tweeds to a
pressure campaign against these top aides well first of all I've got to say
he sure if I were in the White House I'd want them to be talking about the
economy and bringing the remains home from North Korea and all of that the
problem is that Donald Trump keeps tweeting and any
the subject he attacks robert muller and he attacks robbed of michael cohen and
so he steps on his own story i think that's part of the problem part of the
problem here how i inflated in fairness the times does quote rudy guiliani is
saying if you're going obstruct justice you do it quietly and secretly not with
these public blasts I would say traditionally you would I read that but
Donald Trump Donald Trump doesn't do anything the way everybody else had
already done it here's this takes me back to the early days of the Trump
White House in the press room Sean Spicer we didn't know right covering the
White House how to deal with these tweets and we asked Sean Spicer should
we take these series for unite with Sean Spicer said every tweet is a
presidential statement yes take them seriously so you cannot ignore these
twelve know what is accusing the meaning of ignoring the president the United
States is that going out after a sessions or Comey I think it does raise
an issue Morgan another story there was a lot of
coverage of and this was generated by the Republican side eleven conservative
House Republicans introducing an impeachment resolution against rod Rosa
Stein the Deputy Attorney General for allegedly slow-walking requests for
documents this was never going anywhere Paul Ryan shut it down and kind of
backed off but it got a lot of coverage to compete with such things as as you
say the four point one percent jump in the GDP this quarter I listen I think
the Tea Party wanted that coverage Howie I mean I think that they they are
incredibly frustrated what they feel like was a slow walking effort by the
DOJ to get these documents out and then on top of it they were incredibly
frustrated as a co-equal branch of government at the amount of redactions
so this was I think the tea party shot across the bow but so why don't you use
if you didn't particularly like the New York Times lead story on Mahler and
Trump's tweets why don't you view that as a distraction and I say that only
because it was obvious to anybody's been in Washington ten minutes that they
don't have the votes in the house to impeach Rosen sign no they don't have it
but I think that this is this is what the tea party wanted they wanted to get
this the you saw Jim Jordan announced for speaker this week so do I think it's
the best strategy going into election for Republicans and vulnerable districts
I don't think that they love this story at all in fact I think that they would
want the focus to be on the GDP on the North Korean remains but the tea party
is proven you know the past seven years to be incredibly
effective at drumming up media coverage because what happens is the loudest
people in your party on either side I'm sure the Democrats think this about some
of their members as well the people that are the loudest are the ones that get
the microphone shoved right loud voice to get bill back in here critics say
this is really because they don't like the way Rosenstein has overseen the Maul
investigation but given that it was never going anywhere should have been
covered as a kind of a PR stunt you know why I think but first of all that's what
it was yeah it's to borrow a phrase he's not against PR stunts no no phrase those
media buzz I mean they wanted to make some media buzz before they left for the
break and they wanted to help Morgan's right they want to help Jim Jordan and
his impossible quest for speaker look there ain't gonna be any impeachment and
there ain't gonna be any Jim Jordan as Speaker I think it got some publicity
because it was so dumb it was so reckless it's never going to get a vote
Paul Ryan is not going to bring this up for a vote in the house so it was it was
strictly I don't know not even a Hail Mary pass it was a stunt well it worked
in because I got a lot of coverage and you know impeachment aside the president
wants to get rid of Robert Moses Stein he can fire him tomorrow except right
obviously to be a huge political backlash bill press we're gonna take his

president Trump to declassify key parts of the highly redacted Carter page FISA
application House Intelligence Committee Chairman Dan Nunez joins me right now
from the world Ag Expo in two-layer good to see you sir thanks very much for
joining us I have to see you Maria thank you yeah I have here the FISA warrant in
my hands and it's incredible the number of redactions every page is blacked out
congressman and I want to ask you about that because you basically said look
this has to be declassified in order for the American people to understand tell
us why well it's kind of like Groundhog Day if you remember a few weeks ago when
I was in New York and on your show we were talking about the heavy read
actions that were done to the house intelligence committees report that
actually had the information on what Russia was doing in the election however
it had been totally redacted so the public couldn't see it while the
meantime the media was essentially attacking the Republicans work well now
here you have another situation where
with the fisa that we've fought so hard to make sure the public is understood
that clinton paid for dirt was used to get a warrant to spy on an American
citizen using our secret counterintelligence capabilities in this
country so now I can't see it but you held it up I think roughly 70 75 percent
of that FISA that came out last week that look and we're glad we're glad this
came out for the public to see but at the same time there's so much that's
redacted Maria and if you if you notice what the left and the mainstream media
said because once we were we were exonerated once this came out because we
had put out a memo or we had said that this dossier or the dirt was used to get
a FISA warrant we were exonerated last weekend but now if you if you look at
what they were saying they said oh but the really juicy stuff it's actually the
really stuff that proves collusion and how bad Carter page really was and how
they were including with Russians that's what's redacted well that was that was
kind of the news for 48 hours but once the left and the media found out that
the House Republicans on the Intelligence Committee had asked back in
June for the president to declassify up to 20 pages you hear crickets you hear
nothing you don't hear them they don't want that unredacted they don't want
transparency for the American people so the press the president has the letter
from us I think his lawyers are looking at this to see if they can declassify it
sooner rather than later but the sooner this comes out the better off we all are
because what I've said is what's left that's redacted the American people
really do need to know what's energy yeah that's what I want to ask you about
because I read the op-ed this weekend with you in The Wall Street Journal and
it's titled Evan núñez Washington's public enemy number one and in it you
say if people think using the clinton dirt to get a FISA is bad what she what
else that's in that application is even worse and you identify a specific number
of pages in the letter you sense of President Trump that need to be redacted
can you tell us anything about what could possibly be even worse than using
an unverified piece of nonsense to actually get a warrant to spy in an
American citizen well and therein lies the
oblem right so you the mainstream media and the left they can run out and say
well what's really bad in there is the stuff that the public can't see it's
redacted but the reality is is that's not the case those of us who have been
providing oversight over this issue we've had several of our members who
have been painstakingly going through it piece by piece and we are quite
confident that once the American people see these 20 pages at least for those
that will get real reporting on this issue they will be shocked by what's in
that FISA allocation has has the president read the unredacted portions I
have no idea what the president has or has not read all I know is that we sent
him a letter back in June asking him to declassify those 20 pages or more I mean
if they can be classified the more the better but I think the bulk of what we
would like to see are 20 pages in the last file that was signed by the Deputy
Attorney General Rod Rosenstein you know it seems that the midterm elections
become that much more important the stakes are so high on these midterm
elections we won't know any of this stuff without
your committee and your colleagues in at judiciary and and oversight we wouldn't
know half of the stuff that should place in the 2016 elections what happens if
the house flips and the Democrats take the majority in the House come the
midterm elections is what I said in the Wall Street Journal interview yeah The
Wall Street Journal interview over the weekend I stated that that I am quite
confident because I've seen that this game played many times before there's a
stall game going on at DOJ and FBI they're trying to stall as much as they
can hoping and betting that Republicans would lose the house in the fall and if
that happens then you essentially it shuts down everything rod Rosenstein
will not be held in contempt FBI will not be held accountable all these
investigations will shut down everything will be buried and you'll be left with
media narrative saying oh what the public can't read what you really can't
read what's blacked out that's the really bad stuff against Carter page and
the Republicans in the Trump campaign that's why the sooner the president he
classifies this the better and I think the American people need to
understand how important it's going to be to get out and vote in this election
well tell us where your investigation stands right now is rod Rosenstein
performing is do you think his leadership is encouraging them to be a
prompt and and and and show us justice well what I can tell you is is that
there was a move late last week to begin impeachment I think there are there are
grounds for impeachment and we should hold them accountable I think Congress
has given up way too much power the way I understand it is is that the Judiciary
Committee and Oversight Committee got commitments on Friday I think the
speaker also got commitments from what I understand that documents will be
provided so we're short a few documents we we are supposed to see those this
week but in addition to that interviews / depositions will begin over August so
we will have members of Congress that will be flying back to Washington during
August to conduct interviews with very important witnesses that need to be
interviewed as it relates to getting to the bottom of this Russia gate scandal
mr. chairman let me let me switch gears real quick and ask you about what's
going on with Twitter and shadow banning the president tweeted about it do you
think social media is censoring conservative views and conservative
speakers yeah you know what I didn't even I did I had no idea what Shadow Man
and even was I had absolutely no clue I had over so for several months people
have been contacting me saying that hey I tried to find you on on Twitter I
couldn't find your account why is that and then you had a report that came out
where in fact there were four people in the House of Representatives and in the
only four politicians in the country the elected officials that were being
quote/unquote well they don't call it shadow banning but effectively we were
getting caught up in some type of trap right to where people couldn't see our
Twitter feed that was that was mr. gates mr. meadows mr. Jordan and myself okay
so I don't know what Twitter's up to it sure looks to me like they're censoring
people and they ought to stop it and we're looking at any legal remedies that
we can go through
