thanks guys good morning everybody breaking overnight a six-person now
confirmed dead in California's crews work around the clock to try and beat
back this explosive wildfire big challenge to unveil him alive inside of
America's newsroom hope you had a good weekend good morning YouTube Belle good
morning everyone I'm Sandra Smith well seventeen fires burning across the
Golden State more than 600 homes destroyed tens of
thousands of people forced to leave their homes
officials hoping to turn the tide we're feeling a lot more optimistic today as
we are starting to gain some ground rather than being in the defensive mode
on this fire all the time we're starting to make some good progress out there I
think you can see that you have Paul reporting live in the Redding California
this fire is only about five percent contained over the weekend how is it now
chef good morning yeah bill we are just learning that the car fire here in the
Reading area is now at seventeen percent containment isolating firefighters here
to feel like they have a better grasp on this fire but the devastation caused by
this fire will be long-lasting as they take a look up to the shoulder here you
can see this was one family's home there's a garage back there presumably
an area for a boat and right up front of the house that was a truck all of this
happening to many other homes hard-hit in this neighborhood that are now
charred and reduced to ash now just over the weekend the fire doubled in size is
now nearly at 100 thousand acres the car fire has forced nearly 50 thousand
people from their homes many of these folks wondering what they'll find
when they finally return home everything is in our car because you just don't
know and so it's just kind of that uncertainty all the time of we don't
know exactly when we're gonna have to leave again so we're staying across
and we're just kind of checking on our house making sure it's okay checking on
neighbors how law enforcement personnel tells us that they are looking into
several cases of missing people active right now seven particular cases but
they tell us this is a very fluid situation and most of those cases have
been resolved now what about the other fires burning in California Jeff
unfortunately we're waking up this morning hearing that the that the fire
burning near Yosemite National Park the Ferguson Fire has claimed the life of a
firefighter that firefighter according to investigators was hit by a tree while
trying to extinguish flames in that area that fire the Ferguson fires we
mentioned right now is at more than 54,000 acres with 30% containment the
park has been closed for several days after smoke in the air we began to
blanket that region but parts of the park could reopen late Friday we're also
learning that two fires are burning along the California coast both both of
those fires right now at low containment it's a big job probably something we're
dealing with all week Jeff Paul thank you live in Redding California
meanwhile President Trump raising the stakes in the battle over the border
wall threatening to shut down the government if he does not get the
funding he has been demanding the president
firing off this morning a short time ago tweeting quote I would be willing to
shut down government if the Democrats do not give us the votes for border
security which includes the wall must get rid of lottery Kathryn release etc
and finally go to system of immigration based on merit we need great people
coming into our country Doug mackelway live at the White House
for us this morning Doug it's an interesting tactic to see a Republican
president embracing the prospects of a government shutdown yeah I sure as
sandra history has shown in fact that whenever there has been a government
shutdown in the past it is the republican party that takes the blame
for it and in the aftermath of that tweet which you just read from the
president democrats are setting the stage again to place blame on another
government shutdown the shutdown would be very bad news for the country total
disruption and I think it'd be a very bad idea for Republicans side going in
sir do you think it would handle but many congressional Republicans are also
of the mind that a government shutdown would be very bad for their party let's
hope not I think hopefully most of the appropriation bills will actually be
passed a little more a little bit of Pryor's Asian spending so I say we don't
like playing a shutdown politics I don't think it'd be helpful so let's try and
avoid it well the president isn't flying that in fact he just doubled down on it
issuing and firing off a new tweet since you the one you just read senator his
new tweet reads quote we must have border security get rid of chained
lottery catch and release sanctuary cities go to merit-based immigration
protect ice and law enforcement and of course keep building but much faster
than the wall his thinking is that no matter how much Democrats in the
mainstream media play up the hurtful effects of government shutdown it is a
crisis that pretty much does not exist outside the Beltway that your average
American will get along just fine with a government shutdown essential services
will still be provided so his security checks will still go out there is some
time however this becomes a really pressing issue Congress
to come to some agreement on a spindle by September 30th but then again that
puts them right up against the midterm elections Sandra
it does indeed Doug the president's team meanwhile punching back after these
accusations from his former lawyer Michael Cohen what is the latest with
that well Michael Cohen is taking a royal beating from the president's inner
circle from the president's lieutenants ever since he released that recording of
surreptitious recording of the two men there petraea him is a man who will say
or do anything to say out of jail including doctoring that tape
president's very surprised which indicates you know about this transact
is financing what do we finance come to Italy we got to pay and he said not by
cash interruption Cowan says no not button and then Trump says check
immediately it's cut off click next thing you hear is Don junior he must be
talking to Don junior but that's erased also a Giuliana believes that Cohen's
sirup tatius recording itself and any doctoring of it could both be punishable
offenses Sandra back watching all that this morning Doug McHale we thank you
nominee Brett Kavanaugh meets with Senator Joe Manchin marking the first
meeting with a Democrat the West Virginia lawmaker just one of three who
have scheduled to sit down with president Trump Supreme Court nominee
one of three Democrats Republicans assist that Cavanaugh's confirmation
should be a no-brainer he's highly qualified well deserving we're gonna
break the back of every Democratic effort to stop this good man from being
on the Supreme Court the president could not have chosen better he's got to get
confirmed with Democratic votes so let's bring in Barbara you're from the
Washington Examiner fox news contributor byron good day to you on a monday
morning late july so you say this marks a new phase explain well it does up till
now no democrat has has even asked Kavanaugh to come talk in his office and
today Kavanagh will be meeting with Joe Manchin who is the first Democrat to
speak to him as always with these cases it just comes down to the numbers there
are 51 Republicans in the Senate if Senator McCain
cannot vote that's 50 Republicans do not have anybody they can lose and still
confirm Brett Kavanaugh that's where some of the Democrats come in remember
senator Manchin from West Virginia senator Heitkamp from North Dakota and
Senator Donnelly from Indiana all of them voted for Neal Gorsuch last year
all of them are now up for re-election in states that donald trump one really
big 40 points in West Virginia 30 plus in North Dakota 15 points in in Indiana
so the question for those Democrats is going to be you voted for Neal Gorsuch
why would you vote against Brett Kass so they've got a calculation to make and
there's the political equation in this all the to because the midterms are
coming up what do you think they do Byron well I think some of them vote for
Brett Kavanaugh it's just going to be very difficult for them to say that I
voted for Neal Gorsuch but maybe this nomination is so consequential that I'm
going to vote against it now Senator Schumer leading the otherwise
United Democratic opposition is really asking these senators just don't come
out and say anything be quiet keep your powder dry and and and give us
the Democrats time to try to build a case against Brett Kavanaugh so I think
that you'll see these these these Democrats who voted for Gorsuch I think
you'll see them stay pretty quiet okay kill we get much closer Schumer is also
saying this too on-screen part of this statement this deliberately selective
request leaves out what may be the most important thing in judge Cavanaugh's
record his time as White House staff secretary what are Republicans hiding in
judge Cavanaugh's record he worked in the bush White House for about three
years I think exactly in period this is a real interesting part of his career
judge Kavanagh has not always been a judge from 2003 to 2006 he was in a job
called the staff secretary for the White House which is a big job it basically
organizes all of the paper that gets in front of the President and Democrats are
going to try to argue that Cavanaugh had a role in controversial Bush era
decisions like enhanced interrogations like war powers
like signing statements and they're gonna want to go into all of these
things and hang anything that they don't like around Cavanaugh's neck and
basically Republicans are gonna say forget about it no Rob Portman said
there could be a million documents good luck with that
Byron thank you we'll see where it goes today big meeting will get joe Manchin's
readout on it later today thank you sir thank you Bill man you bet Sandra what's
coming we'll have a lot more on this with today's headliner Harvard Law
Professor Emeritus Alan Dershowitz will get his take at the top of the hour of
the torna trying to get Cavanaugh through by the 1st of October that's the
schedule Mitch McConnell is set up right now to run track for it we see whether
or not that sticks right looking for the Dershowitz next job coming up Rudy
Giuliani not pulling any punches with the president's former attorney Michael
Cohen now I've listened unfortunately unfortunately for my clients point of
view to many many hours of caves and the man is a pathological manipulator liar
and that's not always 7 moments why the Trump legal team says they believe
someone has been manipulating audio tapes and why they believe Michael Cohen
is not a reliable witness Plus president Trump reigniting his feud
with the New York Times this time taking aim at the paper's publisher Howie Kurtz
is on deck with that also Sandra vice president Mike Pence says he's honored
to get part of the arrival ceremony for some of our nation's bravest killed
during the Korean War retired four-star general Jack keen on what this could
signal for the talks to come he came home with the medal on his chest but
and my dad who's gone now 30 years raised us to understand that he always
thought the heroes of the Korean War were the ones that didn't get to come
home
you
